Mapopolis question
Ok I just downloaded all of the state maps from their website. Now I want to route from my home in Ohio to Myrtle Beach, SC. I searched the forums for a solution on how to do this and see that there are highway maps for each state that will allow me to identify which counties I would need to load for the trip. Where can I get these highway maps. Please don't tell me I have to pay extra for them.

Thanks guys!

They're not extra, but I'm not sure you will be happy after you read this. You have to go back to each state. At the top of each state is a major highways map.

I put all the major highway maps in one directlry, so I can load them at one go with "Load contiguous". I put all detailed maps for a state in one directory so I can load any one state all at once.

There's no reason why you can put the major highways and one state in a directory to get the entire route, plus detailed routing for your beginning or ending state. You can even put two states and the major highways together, but be careful. Mapopolis limits the maps loaded to a maximum of 20M population. So loading two states at once depends on which 2 states.

Ok now that I have the major road maps loaded I routed my trip from OH to SC. On Mapopolis it says 19hr. 38min. @ 736.7 miles. The same route in Mapquest says 12 hours, 43 minutes @ 695.97 miles. What's up with the difference? Especially iwith the amount of time?

Mapopolis is not good at estimating time. It always comes up with a slow estimate. I can't explain the distance difference, unless one or the other has a difference in the route somewhere you didn't notice or one or the other has distances incorrect. I suspect the routes are different, as I have always found Mapopolis distances pretty accurate.

The routes aren't exactly the same between the two. I'll have to sit down and go thru them line by line and see where the difference is. An extra forty miles is alot if there's a shorter way. Hopefully it is just like you said that one is just wrong about some of the distances. I also sent off an email to Mapopolis about this so I'll see what they say and post back.

Thanks

Try Yahoo's maps and see what you get.

maps.yahoo.com

Come to think of it, who's data is the Major Roads map based off of?

I see Mapquest and Yahoo both use Navtech.

Yahoo results for the same trip....

Distance: 693.5 miles Approximate Travel Time: 10 hours 40 mins

And Mapopolis says they use NavTech for their Navigator maps.

Holy cow... 19 hours vs 12 hours vs 10 hours? What a huge difference...

Maybe Mapopolis has you in their database as an 85 year-old retired person.

(No offense to our seniors out there, but some of you drive kinda slow - I will too, when I get up there, just because I can

That's why I threw that in.

Email Mapopolis and let em know what you found. I'd say that definitely needs to be worked on.

Yea I'd say so. I emailed them last night. Got one response so far, checking if I had major roads loaded and adjacent maps. I haven't heard anything back yet since then.

Ok it looks like the difference mile wise between mapquest and mapopolis is that mapquest has me getting off of the interstate onto a US route, where mapopolis is keeping me on the interstate as long as possible. Now the question is, is this US route a quick road all the way through or does the speed limit fluctuate? Anyone from SC that can give me details on US route 220 so I can maybe figure out whicj program is making the mistake?

After talking with tech support at Mapopolis it looks like what MAY be the problem is there is Navtech update that they said has already been applied at MapQuest. But Mapopolis is waiting for the European update to be ready as well, before they release their update. I'm waiting to hear back about when it'll be ready.
