Let's face it, NO nav software is perfect - including OCN and Iguidance. Both software titles have been praised AND skewered on this site.
The main beef folks have had with OCN is the memory issue. If you are smart, you install all of your software to bis or sd/cf anyway. Do this and you really don't even need to worry about clearing ie cache.
Since you are running 2003, you should have no problems if you get IGuidance. The problems start when you try to run it on WM5. IGuidance has yet to put out an update (sigh).
Give Destinator PN a look. I was in the same boat as you. It seemed next to impossible to pick something with no prior experience with GPS. I know alot or most go with either OCN or IG but I decided to try PN and have been very happy. I use mine every day in and around Atlanta and it has done a great job.
I had OCN5 problems on a brand new X50 with nothing installed aside from SPB on the SD card and the IE cache cleared. Glad you happy customers enjoy it, it frustrated the crap out of me, esp for $180
To everyone that replied, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. It's clear that there's no clear winner in the "one size fits all" category. I bit the bullet and ordered my first GPS unit (BT-338) with iGuidance. I'll be sure to post my experience once I get the hang on it.
hmm.. might want to read up this thread about some quirky iGuidance routing. As long as you are aware of the potential problems I think iGuidance is pretty good.
not to put down Iguidance.. but it's very annoying when driving a logn way, like I live in CT, and when going to NY ot NJ it will tell me to get off an exit, but if the traffic is slow enough, and I pan the map up, I can see I get right back on the same highway again, so no point of getting off then back on again.
One of the good things I heard about OCN5 is the gps tracking is more "real time"
You might want to read GPS201 about that. All GPS receivers update location once per second, so no software can be more real time than that. OCN and some others, then use predictive logic to make it look more real time.

Well it would be nicer if we had the option to switch.
I wish OCN would make some kinda of Demo.
Other then that I can't see the need to spend that much on the software.
Hey KB. Don't feel that you're alone either. I went thru the exact same agony and I know a lot of others have too. It's really tough since most companies won't offer a demo. Props to Mapopolis in this regard.
I also read and read and read and ended up with IG and the BT-338 also. It's been really great and I've enjoyed it.
I think of it like buying a TV. You can look and compare and test this and test that, but bottom line, when you get the TV home and it's not beside all of the others and you picked one of the top ones, it's really not going to matter what the others look like anymore. That's how I feel with IG. I read as much as I could and I picked one of the better ones (I feel). I really have nothing else to compare it to, but I couldn't be more happy. I guess we won't even know what we're missing, which could be a good thing.
I have yet to buy a gps unit and software but like others have been doing a lot of reading. I emailed support at buygpsnow.com regarding waypoints and the the two programs. This is what I got back:
"For Waypoint, iGuidance only could support 1 waypoint. You should use consider the OnCourse Navigator 5 software which supports unlimited number of waypoints and iGuidance only supports 1 waypoint.
With OnCourse Navigator 5 (OCN5), you could mark your favorite's locations by tapping on the map and save that location (with lon and lat data) and you may route to them in the future by bring up your favorite folder in OCN5."
For some the waypoint issue is no big deal. For me, it is a deal breaker. That is one reason why I went with OCN.
I was used to MS&T on the pc which allows you to snap a route to a new route and block off whole areas to avoid. None of the ppc nav s/w titles give you this level of route blocking or manual route changing.
My point is this ... with unlimited waypoints, I can easily set alternative routes on OCN to avoid areas and save these routes if necessary.
To paraphrase Jake -- gps features that are important and maybe even a dealbreaker to one person may be of little significance to another. Your best bet is to force rank features that are of importance to you, and then look at the available s/w packages to determine which best fits! :approve:
Also, I like amheck's TV analogy above!
