GPS for my Axim ????
I have just bought a Dell Axim 5 and am trying to find out a good GPS receiver that will hook up some where else then the Compact Flash card slot. The Maps I have are on CF cards and I cannot use the CF slot for both. I would like a good GPS receiver. Can anyone recomend a good one? Thank You for your reply in advance. Keith

Your only other choice if you don't want to use the CF slot is the mouse type. I originally thought of that too for my Axim then scratched off because of the idea portability, wires tangling mess even though the mouse type costs less than the CF version.
Deluo on Ebay or from GPS passion is your best bet. It is affordable, use the same good chip as the Holux and has all the plugs plus charger for the mouse GPS. Sign up with GPS passion, donate the money to become a member then get the discount rate from Deluo website. I got 10% off from Semson after donate $10 to GPS passion. I bought the Holux CF + Mapopolis Navigator combo. from them.

Thanks Tom for your Reply. I think I will go with the Holux Receiver. After a little more thought, I am going to put the maps on Secure digital cards and use the CF for may Receiver. Thanks again.

Hey once you have the GPS with Mapopolis map (that is if you buy it) can you help me out with something here? I have a house numbers mismatched problem in my area. They don't match for what on the map and the actual location of the house. That goes for other houses too not just my house.
You see what I am talking about once you have it. Actually you can download the demo map from them for 7 days to play with for your area. I assumed you know how to download and all that to use on your Axim but in case you don't here is the quick one:
download the viewer first from Mapopolis into your Axim, select your state, county and transfer it to your CF (you don't need Holux yet) I use the reader which is a whole lot faster than the active sync. Open the map, select the map, check contiguous then play it away. Put your house number in find search address and let it locate for you then compare with the numbers on that street of your house on the map to see if they match. Just click on the street left or right it will show the house number on your Axim.
Have fun playing with it and let me know about the house numbers in your area. Thanks.

Tom

Hi Tom, I am not sure about Mapopolis. I have Maptech Terrain Navigator now. I may get mapopolis. Is it for streets and roads? I do not know much about GPS yet. I may not be any help. But will try.

House numbers are OK in my area. This is probably caused by an error in the NavTech data base. You can go to NavTech and report the error. They have a reputation for sending surveyers out and fixing their database.

House numbers on my street are correct in Mapopolis. In fact, it's one of the few who do have it right. Most get the numbers backwards. I live on a cul-de-sac with the low numbers at the end and the high numbers at the entrance. Most software reverses that, but Mapopolis has it right.

cf vs gps antenna
i have the pharos cf gps, only problem is that the cf gps unit blocks the headphone jack to hook up the speaker in the powered mount unit. hence, while the cf gps is great for portability, the basic pocket pc gps(not the cf unit) is probably a better choice for auto use-i wish someone had told me before i bought it

Neither does the Haicom 303MMF (which has a movable head via the GPS slot) - but as a note to anyone that has a Bluetooth card, get ready to use wires - there is a known but unfixed error with these types of cards improperly interacting with the BT stack drivers.

I'll be posting this info in the review, and have posted many messages (including one in the Dell forum) about this problem and have heard nothing back.

But that's beside the point, and has nothing to do with the receiver itself - it seems to work nicely, as I'm sure the Holux does as well.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I purchased the Deluo (Holux GM-270) form their site on ebay, should be here later this week. I also ordered the external antenna. I almost bought the Holux GM-270 "ultra" but for the extra $50.00 I hope this one will do. Holux claims the ultra is alot more sensitive but from what I have read alot of people say the basic version of the GM-270 works well.

P.S. Does anyone know where to get a good Mobile mount for my Axim 5?? Thanks. Keith.

I'd like a bit of info on this, as well - Mind you, a '96 Golf doesn't really have space for a mount, argh!

http://www.arkon.com/pdamount.html

Arkon has a good selection of PDA mounts at full price.

http://www.semsons.com/gpsacsof.html

Semsons has less selections but at a discounted price.

GREAT info! Thanks... I like the one at Semson one that's $24 - I've got NOWHERE on the dash to put the bloomin' thing, so a window-mount is a necessity...

Now, if only I can find it in Canada!
