Axim X50V, BT-338 and TT5 - no GPS device
Heya, I'd appreciate some help here, I'm tearing my hair out.

I have the above three parts for my satnav system - the Tomtom5 (genuine) seemed to install fine and I've applied the update. I've paired the X50V with the BT GPS, the BT-338 shows flashing LEDs to indicate it's working with BT and has a valid GPS signal. I tried hooking it up to a PC and it claimed the GPS was working fine. However, the X50V claims there is no BT GPS device, I've checked the BT manager and it claims the serial port is connecting inbound on port 8, so that's what I've set Tomtom to use but no dice - I've left it for a while to see if it would connect, but nothing seemed to be happening. Also, I noticed the BT connection seems to disconnect every few minutes, I'm guessing this is just because it's idling it's being disconnected?

Really frustrated after forking out nearly 500 pounds on all this, so I'd really appreciate some help.

Thanks,
John

On my X50v the BT port is COM7, not COM8. Try setting that in TomTom and see if it connects. The disconnect is most likely a timeout issue, as you suspect.

Can you see the nmea data in the utility provided by GlobalSat? That software has a "find port" kind of function. You might pair up the bt and then let that software find the signals for you. It will report port and speed it finds.

One last thing. Once you do the utility trick, make sure you completely kill that utility. Only ONE app can use the COM port at a time, and if the utility is just pushed into the background but is still running, it will tie up the port and TomTom won't be able to use it.

Hi,

few things to check:
1) make sure that gpsinfo is picking up the receiever.
2) only one application can use the receiver at the time - make sure that prior to running tomtom, you shut down gpsinfo
3) remember the com port that you were able to use gpsinfo with the receiver, (its com7 with my gps/pda). you can try to use the "serial" or "nmea" option when selecting a pda, and then just specify thr baud rate (4800/38400 doesn't really matter) and on the next screen choose "serial port on COM...", the ... is important.
because the screen is not wide enough, TOMTOM clipps the rest of the text, when you tap on it, hold down the stylus, it will make the text smaller, hold and drag the stylus till you reach the correct one.

You need to set it to the *OUTBOUND* port (which is Com 7 on my x50v). It is counter-intuitive, I know.
