A great gift - X51v, but GPS?
Hello everyone!
Obviously I'm new. My wife gave me a fully loaded X51v this week, including Dell's wired GPS package. I'm wondering, before I even open the GPS package, if this one is worth it? Reason I ask is that I'm an avid GPS user and currently run a Magellan Meridian, and understand I can purchase a cable to connect it as a GPS receiver. I use MapSend software with the Meridian, and got MS Streets & Trips '06, including the Pocket program, with our new computer. It seems the software with the Dell package is considered to be about the same as Streets & Trips based on what I read here, so I'm wondering if this should be returned and save all that cash since I have "equivalent" components... For me, I would use the X51v GPS while driving only for street routing with that fantastic screen because I'd otherwise just grab the Meridian and go if on foot.
What are the opinions here? If I use my Meridian as the receiver, what software would you recommend that works well with my new X51v and is accurate?

I'm not too familiar with GPS, so I can't really answer you, but I'm pretty sure someone will...

Hi there,
that's VERY nice of your wife :)
I can't comment on Dells GPS package from my own experience, just can tell you that the software got pretty devastating reviews (don't know about the receiver). So, at least, I would think about purchasing different software to use with whatever receiver you choose. There are some pretty reasonably priced bundles on the market - maybe if you asked your wife ;-)
Myself, I am using a Haicom 303S CF card (don't want any more cables) and Destinator PN (Europe maps). I am very satisfied with this combination (usual disclaimers apply). Assuming you are posting from the US, I cant tell you anything about the accuracy of the Destinator there. Here in Europe, it works like a charme - even my wife can use it (gd&r).
Cheers,
Klaus

Destinator, Mapopolis, OnCourseNavigator5, iGuidance are four very popular systems. OCN5 works on the X51v, the others are working on patches to run with the new operating system. You can get a Magellan/Axim cable from pc-mobile.net. They ship quickly. I used a Meridian Gold with the Axim for a long time, but eventually went over to a BlueTooth GPS - no wires.
