Axim x50v w/WM5 and Garmin GPS 10
Hi Everyone,
I hope someone can help me. I am really at wit's end.
I had my Garmin GPS 10 working perfectly, then unwisely "upgraded" to Windows Mobile 5. Everything works perfectly on the PDA except the Garmin. I cannot understand why and need some help desperately. Please, if you have this set up and running, can you help?
I have two problems. The first is that the detail maps are not being found. They are on an SD card. I have deleted and reloaded them. This is really irrelevant at this point because of problem #2.
Problem #2: I cannot get the GPS 10 to connect. I have seemingly tried every combination of settings and nothing even hints at working. This was so simple on the old OS. I have successfully set up a partnership, so I know the PDA is seeing the GPS, but the Garmin software refuses to connect. It just continuously says "Searching COM1", "COM2", etc. It never connects, so it never acquires sats.
How do I get this working? I have researched, reinstalled, etc. I've done all the usual helpdesk things. Nothing works.
Thank you very much for any help.
Sincerely,
Dave

Dave - I am in the same boat as you. I went into the GPS applet (Settings/System) and indicated that the outgoing software port for GPS was com 7, and then created a partnership with the GPS 10 in the bluetooth manager, however when a chose a serial port connectionin the bluetooth manager, I couldn't use com 7. Needless to say, Que couldn't find the GPS 10. I sent an email to Garmin about WM5 compatibility but I may need to roll back to WM2003 until there is a fix or if someone else can figure out how to get this working.

call them..they are very nice and helpful
they claimed in an email the only issue was with a PDA phone which appears wrong based on user issues
they did say they were working on fix for the pda phone
I am very reluctant to move to WM5..as I see only benefit is data being in nonviolatile location..I would rather keep charging my X50v than lose my software functions

It took me a while to figure this out. I use Memory-Map Navigator and the WM5 GPS setup was making the signal from the unit look like a simulated input (i.e. it was coming in as a file vice a live stream). Got it sorted out, but I have a feeling this will wreak havoc on many programs.

Just got it fixed. Garmin has a patch to hardwire QUE to COM7, everything works perfectly after the fix.

Many thanks to Jeff, Joel, and others for your help.
To get the Garmin GPS 10 running on a Dell Axim x50v/x51v with Windows Mobile 5 (WM5)
1. Obtain patch (here or from Garmin tech support)
2. Using a file explorer, rename GARMIN\GARMIN.NVM to GARMIN\GARMIN.NVM.ORIG
3. Extract the patch, copy GARMIN.NVM to the GARMIN folder
4. Soft reset your PPC
5. Go to Settings->System->GPS and set "GPS program port:" to None
6. Go to Settings->System->GPS and set "GPS hardware port:" to None
7. Turn on the GPS 10. Open the BT Manager and turn on Bluetooth.
8. Set up a "New Partnership" with the GPS 10 by following the wizard.
9. Click COM Ports tab and set "Incoming Port" as COM8
10. Set "Garmin GPS 10" as COM7 - security is off
Done! Run the Que software and you should be connected. If not, in Que, go to Menu->System Setup and tab over to "Interface". Set "Communications Port" to "Auto-Detect", then reset it to COM7. It should connect.
Many thanks to all who helped me with this. I appreciate the help.

The patch was sent from Garmin Tech Support to someone on this board, and he passed it around. As long as it makes it work, great as I'm supposed to be receiving the WM5 CD soon.

To Anyone who's gotten the "WM5 patch" working...
Are you seeing that the Que's Nav screen is now too large for the display? Some of the map at the bottom (including the Zoom button) is obscured by the menu bar.
Is this just mine or are others having the same problem.
It's not a serious problem, but thought I'd ask about it.
Dave

Can you post up a screencapture of your PDA screen? So we can see what you're describing?
Thx.

One of the reasons I got the Garmin GPS10 Deluxe was not for the BT GPS device, but for the iQue software (PC desktop/Nroute laptop/PPC software). Of course the fact that their BT device can do both protocols also helped... :))
But their GPS mapping program is hard to beat.

True! Their GPS mapping is really good both Creating routes and re-routing. I just wish they will have a 3D view.

Yeah...3D... eye candy... :) Would be nice... yes. Most times, I switch it from 3D to 2D whenever you come up to dense roads. 3D is effective on highways. But once you're off the highways, 3D is ineffective and 2D is more effective. This is just my opinion and the way I drive. For me, 3D is for viewing the roads from a birds eyeview. But once you're close-up (i.e. downtown and many dense roads), you need simple 2D to see how many side roads you need to pass on either side so you know when your turn is coming up.
