X51V with WM5 won't work with GPS at this moment.

I just bought an X51V and a bluetooth GPS receiver. Here is my experience:

first of all, the bluetooth GPS receiver is working fine. I tested with Microsoft street & trips 2005 on my desktop computer while I put the receiver close to window, it shows my position correctly.

X51V comes with WM5. I use the bluetooth manager to set the receiver. it shows the receiver is at com 8 and incoming port is com 7.

It seems X51V program port setting and hardware setting for GPS (under start->setting->system) doesn't matter how you set, but I set the hardware to com 8 which according to WM5's prompt and program port to com 1.

I installed 4 GPS softwares:

1) destinator 3: won't work with WM5 at all. system have to be reset. don't buy it now until they have a fix!! :realmad:

2) pocket street

3) mapopolis

4) Dell navigation software from Dell

Ok. Here is the result:

I played with the PPC about 4 hours with pocket street and mapopolis, at the begginning, they didn't work. shows "com port is available but no GPS signal". BUT, all a sudden, mapopolis worked, it showed it could track 8 satellites which proved again the receiver was working. then I tried pocket streets, it worked after mapopolis worked. I was so happy at that time but I have no clue how it became worked. no mater what I do, turn it off and on, it worked. then I went to sleep. I was dreamming I was on a trip with this cool system.

The second morning, I turned on my PDA. it doesn't recognize my CF card so I reset it. I tried GPS again, guess what? IT IS NOT WORKING ANY MORE!!!!!!!!! I did nothing to the PDA! I phoned DELL support, a guy said because you don't have the navigation software, actually I have! He said he will mail me dell navigation software, why not? OK!

The third morning, I got the software and install it. It is a software just like other navigation software like destinator, tomtom, mapopolis stc. So I don't think it will change anything. I installed it and it says no GPS found. I KNOW THAT WILL HAPPEN.

Then I phoned DELL support again, the guy answering my phone was patient guy. He did check the information he had and told me:

"THERE ARE NO GPS SOFTWARE REALLY WORKING AT THIS TIME. It is the problem of the new Windows Mobile 5. they are expecting fix for it."

I asked him why it workd on my handheld two days ago. He said I was lucky at that time and it work occasionally but didn't mean it works all the time. I agree him on this point.

I asked him if I could downgrade my X51V to PPC2003SE which work with all the GPS navigation system? He said NO. X50V can upgrade to WM5 but X51v can't downgrade.

Personally I think it is because of the copyright isue rather than can or can't downgrade because the difference between X51V and X50V is only the ROM size and the operating system.

So, I am thinking is there anyone know how can i get a PPC2003 SE and how can I downgrade my system. You can send me email to unclesam__xu@yahoo.ca

I only want my GPS working on my X51V.

I have iGuidance 2.1.3 (from inavcorp.com) and it works just fine on my X51v. I think it's you com ports that are mixed up. Make sure you choose the correct one from within your navigation software.

I am having problems connecting with my Garmin GPS 10.
Dell support tells me that WM5.0 is to new... I hope they will make a fix for this soon. Very soon.

I have a CF GPS card that worked great on my old iPaq but now, under WM5, I can get the card to recognize (with or without the GPS control panel managment turned on) but it won't stay communicating with the card for more than 5 seconds or so. I read somewhere com7 was a good one to use with GPS programs (valid? don't know) with the software redirected to com7 and the hardware on the cf port com4, I can get it to recognize the card but it only keeps the communications with the card for about 5 seconds and then the card has to be pulled and reinserted. If I turn off the control panel GPS software/hardware redirect thing, the software will still recognize the card on com4 (although I think TomTom may have been a problem) but it drops communication still after just a few seconds. The problem occurs in: TomTom MobileNavigator5 iGuidance

HOWEVER: the Holux card comes with a program called GPS Viewer which is simply a diagnostics type program that talks to the GPS and does a raw data dump from it. It also has a tab that shows the satelites it's connected to - not my area of expertise so forgive my gps lingo. This program doesn't stop communicating like the others (at least not for the 5 mins I've left it to do it's thing.) I don't know if this is at all useful but I don't think it would be a problem communicating with any comX port based gps unit (blue tooth port etc.) and it has an auto port scan feature. Maybe some of you would find it useful to test your bluetoothy gps's. It's available for download here:
http://www.holux.com.tw/Temp%20web/d...ewer%201.5.exe

and if that page doesn't work it's called GPS Viewer ver 1.5 and it's here in the download section:

I know the problem and it is working now! Great!!!!

I know how to make X51V with WM5 work with blkuetooth GPS receiver

I have to say the every patient technical support guy know nothing about the technical isue. really!! because they told me nothing will work with WM5 on X51V and they asked me to change back to X50V with PPC2003. :realmad:

Here is the solution. turn the bluetooth receiver on, wait for about 30 seconds to warm up. then open bluetooth manager on X51V, then delete the current bluetooth GPS device on your X51V( this is the KEY, every important). then scan the bluetooth receiver
, then the X51V will ask you to pair the bluetooth device, input the code. then select use serial port service. then search for new out going port and set it. mine is comm 8. then click OK. All Done. Now I can start the GPS software and it works great.

the painful thing is you need to do this everytime you get into your car. but nothing we can do because bluetooth device needs to pair every time. If we want WM5 do something, that will be it should have automatically pair feature.

By the way, I am now using Dell navigation software free and this is so nice. Thanks for the first technical support stuff , He didn't know too much neither but send me this software. I have this software free now. It has way more data than destinator and mapopolis. It comes with 3CDs map infomation for US and canada. I am even thinking of sell it cheap to someone . :) :) :)

Found another program that works with the CF gps - don't see why it wouldn't work with bluetooth but haven't tested.

It's freeware (or similar) and available here:
http://www.aspecto-software.com/WiFiFoFum/

Wififofum is a network stumbler with gps support. It works perfectly with the built in wifi on the x51v wm5 unit I have. Kudos to this dudes programing abilities. Everyone should check this one out just to see what well written concise ppc software looks like.
:approve:

What didn't work in it was using the M$oft gps redirect software so turn off that check in the control panel gps tab3 and let the wififofum software talk to the comX port you require etc. This was my holux gm-270u CF Card - don't know about bluetooth. Also, it may work with the check on in the control panel gps setting to whatever free comX port you pick - I didn't try all the possiblities with this (insert explitive here) OS setting.

When did we let M$ start selling us alpha versions of their OSes?

Hi,

I'm using Tomtom Navigator v5.1 and a BT Globalsat BT-338 GPS without any problem on my x51v. You have to pair it once and create a new In port (on COM7 generally). Than configure it in your gps program and choose the good COM port.

No problem since.

the problem I have is I have to pair it every time

If I don't delete the BT dvice then pair it every simgle time. It won't work. So I have to spend about 3 minutes before I can drive and use the navigation. WM5 should have a feature that connect to the BT device automatically without all the manul paring process. It is really painful. Don't know how it works better with CF GPS.

Hi I'm having the same problem and tried to follow your solution. It worked OK till I was asked to enter a passcode. But I don't remember entering any passcode before (my system used to work OK with WM2003SE). Any help will be appreciated. My GPS unit is a Holux 231.
