Would it be a mistake if I buy this for my Axim 51v (with BT holux reciever) rather than buying a dedicated GPS software such as a $100US+ tomtom or mapopolis map? I wanted something to connect with my BT GPS with voice navigation and auto-reroute. And the biggest bang for my bucks. I see S&T being on sale for $30CAD at bestbuy.
Speaking of the devil, will any GPS map tell me to turn left even though the street does not allow left turn?
But the 2006 edition has voice guidance right? The website says so. Is voice command the command you tell the software or the voice software tells you?
Streets and Trips 2006 (the laptop/pc part) does have the features you listed. Pocket Streets that it comes with is a useless program. It has very few features. It has no voice or routing.

Let me get this straight and let me paraphrase. Is this what you mean:
"S&T 2006 have 2 parts - S&T itself and Pocket streets. You cannot install S&T onto the Axim but you can only install pocket map. Pocket map is useless since it does not have voice nor routing."
Let me try to help.
Streets and Trips is for the desktop. You make maps and transfer them to the pda. S & T can be used w/a gps receiver to give voice directions etc. That's new for '06 so I have no experience w/it.
Pocket Streets can be used w/gps but it will only show you where you are and where the points of interest are. I like this program, in my opinion it is useful.
I also use tomtom for gps.
You can read my review of streets - see my signature for the link.
Gps software costs alot more than streets, but it gives you alot more. Streets is very cool in conjunction w/pocket streets. I make maps w/pushpins of my customers and print them out. I also download the maps to my pda. This is different than gps, but useful in my opinion.

You are absolutely right. The S&T 06 software is brilliant. I like it very much for my laptop and i have almost no complaints about it. Pocket Streets on the other hand leaves alot to be desired.

Oh dammit! I was hoping for a budget GPS software without forking over $100US. Thanks. Now I will spend a little more extra and invest in somethig more useful.
For those with tomtom or other gps dedicated software - does it ever tell you to turn left on a street with no left turns? And are software updates free (ie construction or street change?)

The mapping software should not direct you down a one way street the wrong way as long as it knows about the restriction. If the one-way is recently changed, or if the database is wrong, it can happen.
Software updates and map databases are two different things. Some vendors update software freely. Map updates ususally cost you money, since the routing software vendors have to pay a royalty for every license they sell and a changed road triggers a new license.
I've actually been wanting to get a new ppc and have ST 2006 on my Dell 600M, ST 2006 is nice, good graphics, etc. On my Dell the voice prompts don't seem to work when I'm driving and if you miss a turn it DOES NOT automatically Re-calculate your route.
The ppc version, from what I've read about is crap. It's basically a viewer and that's it. You have to do your routing from the home pc, then transfer it to the pda.
The graphics are nice on the pc, but the bundle is useless. UNLESS you'll never need a route automatically re-calculated (take a wrong turn) and you carry around your laptop.

Not true, I have this crap, the voice is only for the PC version, if you bring a laptop, you have it. But for pocket version, only map is there. I regret for wasting money on it.
Should I buy this for my PC and later on, buy an other packet for my AXIM 50v? I have both laptop and AXIM 50v.
I really like S&T '06 w/ Pharos GPS when I have my laptop with me on trips and I will continue to use it. However, just like nearly everyone else says, PocketStreets is CRAP and not worth the 5 megs it takes on my axim. It was deleted last week and iGuidance was ordered.
I have gps (OCN + bt-338) that I use all the time with my x30H. It's awesome, but you know, I found my way around to customers before using gps at all by using S&T on my laptop with no gps. For me, the best thing about gps nav software is the ability to go off route and get new directions (interstate blocke by accident, for instance, or just plain feel like exploring). Like Steve, I have all my customers pinned in S&T. Very convenient to be able to see all the information on a big screen.
S&T is awesome for what it is designed for.
1. The POI database is very extensive (for some reason, none of the big box retailers like Home Depot, Target, Walmart, etc show up in any s/w's POI)
2. The routing is phenomenal. Lightening fast. Multi-stop routing with route optimization if you so desire.
3. The ability to block out rectangular sections of a map to AVOID when routing -- man would I buy the first functional gps nav software that lets me avoid areas this way! One of the reasons I bought OCN was that I could route multiple way points, thus manually being able to avoid whole areas (like metro areas for instance)
4. The ability to snap the route to a different road. Man, how beautiful is that? Just drag and drop.
5. The price is right! Mine was almost free after rebate last year.
Too bad they could not transfer these features to a ppc version.
