Loading GPS maps is fast as long as you reformat your storage card...
Hi All,
I was futzing around with my large maps on my Garmin iQue s/w and I found that at one point, the loading of the maps was extremely slow. All I did was move the whole map off (~ 1+ GB) and move it back to my CF card using a card reader.
I then used PocketMechanic to defrag the CF card, but it did not help improve performance. I would not recommend using PocketMechanic for this.
So, I then removed all files from my 4GB CF flashcard, and reformatted the CF card. It might have been overkill but you never know.
I then re-copied all the files back onto the CF card, and voila. Loading/searching addresses on maps from my GPS programs was zipping faster than you can say jackrabbit.
All I can say is that after moving a lot of big files or many small files (i.e. MP3s), its good to reformat/defrag your flashcard eventually, if you notice long wait times when accessing or using a program.
Incidentally, eventhough PocketMechanic's defrag was not great, I should have tried to use WindowsXP's defragment program first before reformatting my CFcard. That might have worked as well. Anyways, try to defragment your CFcard using the WindowsXP defrag program first before needing to reformat, it might save you the hassle and time of moving/re-moving files around.
Thought you would like to know for those who were not aware in the first place.
