A Goodbye Letter to Space Machine PMN.
Dear Friend,
It's been almost 2 years since we have been together.
You have been a great friend, getting me to many a function on time but you are slowly drifting away from my changing needs. First I moved onto 2003 SE and you Still refused to Install into Anything other than Ram, nor did you like to lay on you side, preferring to stand up tall all the time.
And now that I moving onto WM 5 you don't want to play at all.
O boy I hope you announce that you are changing with the times real quick or I feel we will part forever.
I am trully sorry,
Take care I hope that you don't lose all your friends

Who can recommend a software which can beat PocketMap on its interface? So far I cannot find any.
My first love! -- just cannot forget it.

I am so glad you posted that!!! I primarily bought my X50 for that software, and it is still 95% of what I even use the thing for. I was considering a switch to WM5, but not now. Thanks for saving me the aggravation.

I really love my PMN, but I do hope they update soon. The lack of updates is making me nervous.

I also have PMN (R3.12) and for the most part love it (I had Navman on an old iPaq, which was OK, and tried Mapopolis on my Axim x30, but settled on PMN). The interface is very good, and I haven't had any great problem with accuracy (except for new streets, etc. that are just not in the system). Routing seems pretty good. I agree the "install only to main memory" is a pain - in fact one of the reasons I just upgraded my Axim x30 to the model with more RAM was to give more room for PMN, but I sure would prefer to install into the Built-In RAM or storage card. But on the plus side, when I made the PDA upgrade I had trouble getting PMN to see my GPS, and PMN Tech Help responded THE SAME DAY with a response that got me going, so I am hopeful they are not asleep there...

I posted this last March on pocketgps.co.uk, supposedly the "official" message board Space Machine. Never got a response from Space Machine...
I created a corridor for a trip that was 800 miles. I never had a destination that was more than 450 miles from any starting point within the corridor. Routes this long take far too long to calculate. Every time you deviate from the route the program re-calculates the entire route. For a long trip, this takes several minutes. At 65 mph, you can go a long distance in several minutes. As soon as it completed the re-route, the program immediately realized I was no longer where it thought I was, so it started a re-route again. This becomes an endless loop. The only way to prevent it is to stop the car and let the program catch up. In addition, during the re-routing, you can't get access to the main screen or button presses.
I encountered the problem 3 times. It happened when all traffic was re-routed because of construction. The problem also happened when I started the program while moving and planned a long route. And the problem occured with what I suspect was bad map data (East-Central Iowa). The program continuously couldn't decide if I was on the real road or off in a field (off by several hundred feet). Everytime the program thought I was off the road, it started a re-route routine taking several minutes. For really bad data, the program never recovered from the endless loop.
This problem in my opinion makes the program useless for long distance trips. The developers have to significantly speed up the re-routing calculations, or come up with a different algorithm.

My personal opinion
Long distance routing is always difficult for all GPS software. Of course some software may do better. It has a lot to do with your PPC's speed and capacity. My x50 is at least 3 times faster than my old Toshiba e570 when running PMN.
I assume when we take a long trip, usually a big chunk of this trip will be highways. We don't need to use GPS software when we are cruising on highways. I start to use PMN when I get off the highway and into locals.
Also I don't feel the need to plan the trip in PMN at all. All I need to do is to search for the destination address and put it into Favorites. When I need GPS's help, just turn it on and let it locate my current position, then click my Favorites and hit "Go" -- PMN will create a route for me.
I always turn off the feature of "quick back to route" -- so whenever I am off the original route, PMN just create a new one for me, instead of asking me to turn round at next exit to go back to the old route.

As far as the long distance thing.... I suspect most software would suffer from the problem of re-routing while you are driving. But I know what you mean. I was once on a 120 mile trip and missed a turn. I literally had to pull over and wait a few minutes for it to recalculate properly. I doubt any updates would fix that, but I sure would like for it to work on WM5. I understand Excel files can actually be edited on there (without getting messed up)and I could finally use my Axim for more stuff than just GPS and Datebook.

We are in the same boat. Just pray PMN doesn't go away...
One thing I like about WM5 is that it doesn't use RAM to save programs any more. So we don't have to worry about charging the unit all the time.
Also during the testing, I feel that PMN is running faster with PMN. Maybe just my illusion.

PMN has worked well for me, but there's been no announcement of any upgrades for months, so I've wondered if the software is dead or dying also.
