OCN5 Bluetooth X-mas Edition install to card?
I just ordered the OCN5 Bluetooth X-mas Edition (Complete USA maps Pre-Loaded) from buygpsnow.com.
While I wait patiently for it to arrive, I have a question about how this particular package of OCN5 will work. The data is all on an SD card (so that saves me the work of copying the data there). What about the program itself? Is that already on the SD card and can be run from there? Or do I have to install it and either tell the setup program to install it to the card, or move it to the card myself and fix up shortcuts later?
So far, in the 3 months with my X50V I have just installed programs to the default location until I get the hang of the PPC way of doing things. I had been meaning to re-install everything to a card, but haven't had any hard resets yet :approve:
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks ... Mike

On the page you link to, it says: "Easy to setup: The included 1GB high speed SD Card comes pre-loaded with lower 48 states maps and OCN5 installation program. Simply insert the card to your PDA, install the software, activate the license online and you are ready to go. (no downloading required)"

Thanks for the quote. It says "install the software". What I was looking for were suggestions on how to install it (the program, not the maps) to the same card. Anyone?
(maybe this is so easy it will just work right when I do it)

Sorry but we have made a change to the content of the SD Card. To install OCN5:
1) Make sure your PDA is connected to your PC thru ActiveSync.
2) Insert DVD and proceed with the installation.
3) You can only install it onto either your PDA main memory or your alternative CF Storage card (high speed of 60x is highly recommended).
NOTE: you will not be able to install OCN5 to the SD Storage card as there is only less than 14MB left after the complete 48-state US map is loaded.

Thanks joekee, I will bear this in mind when it arrives.
Hmm, I wonder if I can find a 1.1 GB SD card to put it all on :)

You are welcome. When you received the package, you will see an important memo and I strongly suggest you read it prior to installing OCN5. A copy of the memo is available here:
Important Memo: Must read prior to installing OCN5.
NOTE: Yes, if you wish to install OCN5 together with the Seamless USA map to the 1GB card, you will get error message during the installation due to insufficient free space.
So, please do not do it unless you have a 1.28GB or 1.54GB or 2GB SD Card / CF Storage Card. Again, only use 60x and higher speed cards.

You won't want to do that, i don't think. I just got the xmas bundle, and was initially not happy at all. Nothing but problems. The folks at buygpsnow responded within an hour to help me with my problems. In the end, the issue was simple...the whole us map takes up too much memory. Now i have a pretty lean system, and I just couldn't come up with enough memory. But the problem was easy to solve...i just got rid of the whole us map, and just installed a north east map. 215 megs. more the enough info. Took all of 5 mins to download the map. Worked flawlessly after that. I'm so happy i'm going to start a separate post!

You of course have access the following 3 major regions map, which are automatically activated in your x-Mas edition package.
The nice thing about these major regions are you get the complete East coast coverage in under 485MB.
MAJOR Eastcoast USA
Includes the following states as a complete seamless map:
Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia
And 2 other major regions:
MAJOR Central-West USA
MAJOR Central-East USA

Thanks jefflins & Joekee - that occurred to me as I was waiting for my bus tonight. 30MB free does seem difficult to attain, even on a (fairly) lightly-loaded X50v. Installing the MAJOR Central-West USA map instead sounds like the answer.

I run the USA+CANADA seamless map on my X50v/WM2003 with 31MB program RAM free at startup. I have not once had a memory error.
I have a heavily loaded device, but I always archive unnecessary files to a zip file on a storage card. I move them back when I need to uninstall or upgrade a program.
For instance, after an install to storage card, copy to your desktop the file Windows\"Program Name".unload and open it with notepad. This will tell you what and where files were stored on your device. I move to storage card the following items if they exist or are listed by the unload file:
\Windows\"Program Name".unload
\Windows\AppMgr\"Program Name".dll
\Windows\Help\"Name".lnk
\Windows\"Name"Help.htm
\Windows\*.bmp
\Windows\*.2bp
You'd be suprised how much total memory this stuff takes up.
Also, if a program installs to \Program Files\ INSTEAD of the storage card I specified, I move the program to the empty card folder anyway and update the link. It's always worked so far.
Of course running the device lean and clean, keeping IE and Temp files deleted with MemMaid, reducing active Today items, and doing a soft reset before memory intensive programs helps too.
P.S. be sure to install OCN to a storage card not main memory. If you install it to main memory it ends up using 2X the RAM, both Storage and Program!

Alternatively, you could do the following:
1) Delete the USA.map file and if applicable the 2577 as well. (Keep the 4 files for map color)
2) Un-install OCN5 from your PDA main memory
3) Re-install OCN5 on your SD Card
4) then copy the USA.map back.
This should work well.

My suggestion would be to redo your axim and install your important programs to bis and remaining programs on another sd/cd card. I refrain from installing in main memory as much as possible. I also purchased the xmas bundle and have had no problems. I installed OCN5 in bis and works great. In my 2 weeks of using this I've had to soft reset once.

Coincidentally I ended up redoing my Axim this weekend. It started innocently enough - uninstalling Pocket Streets and re-installing it to my SD card (meant as a learning experience for future similar moves of other programs).
Somewhere along the way I got the Axim wedged so that it needed a hard reset (my first in the three months I've had it).
As long as I was resetting I decided to bite the WM5 bullet, which means there is no option to install to RAM.
However, after all that, I still have only 26MB of program memory available, with just my must-have apps installed (which doesn't use up RAM now), and none of them running.
So I'm going to have to just try it, or use the other approaches listed here. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to open this until Christmas
