Help setting up CF GPS

Hi there, just bought a cf gps card of ebay. I have put it in my pda and left it turned on next to a window for around 30mins now in order for it to recieve all the current almanac information. However it has still not got a signal and the manual says it should have one after 20 mins.

Also I am using TOMTOM 5 and I dont know which port to use I think its either COM1 or 3. How do I find out?

Thanks

They don't work well (if at all) indoors, even near a window. You must go outside where it can see the sky free of trees/buildings, particularly for the first fix. It can take as much as 10-20 minutes for that first fix, longer if you move it around.

Get Mapopolis (it's free) and a 9 day demo map of your local area. Let mapoplis automatically find the GPS for you, then note the com port/baud rate and set that in TomTom.

Ok I left my pda out in my garden for about 25 mins and it got a signal ok. So at leats I know it can connect ok.

Now When I went to mapopolis it just kept searching the ports and not stopping.

Any ideas why this is? Im going to have a better go tomorrow as its raining outside atm,

Thanks

I can't help with specifics on your Acer, but you might try manually setting the COM ports one at a time. Set 4800 baud, then move port to port trying to connect. If you get one that works, set it manually in your software.

Get any of the GPS utility apps from Holux, Haicom, GlobalSat. They are usually free downloads. They will search for the gps data, or can be used to manually find the receiver. Once you find the correct port and speed with the utility, manually set those same values in TomTom.
