Axim X50v, TomTom 5.21, WM5, and GPS Cradle (not working)

Ok, so here goes. I have an Axim X50v with TomTom Navigator 5 and a GPS cradle (so wired GPS, not bluetooth). Everything was all well and good with Windows Mobile 2003 installed, running TomTom 5.12. No problems with the program or with the GPS. For some reason I got the bright idea to "upgrade" to WM5 After that, I could not for the life of me get TomTom (which I now have upgraded to version 5.21) to detect my GPS device. No matter what settings I try (set GPS to managed/unmanaged in windows settings, different ports, etc.), TomTom just tells me "No GPS Device Detected!". I have tried other programs to test my GPS unit, including TomTom GPS (separate from TT Navigator), and they all work fine with my GPS on com port 1. In TTN, when I go into the GPS configuration, the option for Com 1 is down at the bottom of the list, but for the identification, it just has a bunch of junk characters (which viewed in TomTom GPS look like russian characters) followed by com 1, which isn't even visible on the screen because of all the crap in front. I have tried googling solutions, but I've only seen a couple other people post anything about this problem, and nobody has given them any helpful feedback. Everything else I've found has been for bluetooth GPS units.

So basically, I would like to know if anyone else has had any luck using a wired GPS with WM5 and TomTom Navigator 5, or if anyone might know a possible solution to my problem.

Thanks in advance :approve:

stevenator65: No, I do not have the TomTom brand GPS unit. It is 3rd party, and the GPS receiver itself is plugged into the cradle by a ps/2 connection.

EasyD: Thanks a lot, I don't know how I missed that Now I feel n00bish for starting another thread. Now I gotta try that out and hopefully it will solve my problems

Turdman, please post your fix even if it's the same as in the thread that EasyD mentioned, and good luck. You can always go back to wm2003 if you have to.

Big Smile Problem solved

Yes, the problem in the thread EasyD mentioned was exactly what happened to me. Here's the simple solution (took me about 5 seconds to fix after wasting hours trying to figure out what was wrong :rolling: )

Launch a registry editor on your pocket pc and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\Serial
There will be a key FriendlyName with the data Se???a?? ?a??d?? st?? COM1:
Just change that gibberish to Serial Cable on COM1: and you're good to go!

Thanks everyone for the help :approve:

-=:[Edit]:=-
One thing I forgot to mention is, I have the windows GPS management disabled (set program/hardware com port to (none) and uncheck manage GPS). I haven't tried out TomTom with it enabled, but I know that it works right now with it disabled.
