How's the installation? Do you have other GPS Nav software in your PPC when you install the OCN?

I got my OCN 5 NOW. Its working properly now. One thing I notice is that in the product information, the version is 5.0. According to other OCN5 user there is already a version 5.1 and upcoming 5.2. Is there a difference between 5.0 and 5.1?

The version you received is version 5.1 and version 5.2 is going to be released with minor defect fixes and the introduction of TMC (paid service and requires additional hardware to receive FM RDS data).

This was my first GPS solution, the installation was really quick. I installed the program onto BIS, it still seems quick to me.
Joekee - please explain TMC further. The 5.2 update will have TMC capabilities for the US? WHat type of equipment will we need / how much are monthly fees? I drive into Boston everyday and this would DEFINITELY be useful.
Thanks!

TMC has been available in the version 5.1 (current) version for the European maps and in version 5.2 patch, this feature will be unlocked for the major cities in the U.S. as well.
As you may already know, TMC data is free just like GPS signal in European countries but in the U.S, it is unfortunately not.
When this is fully implemented, you will be able to get route guidance:
a) based on not only shortly or quickest but also dynamically avoiding areas with traffic jams or road contructions.
b) dynamic alerts on others such as "lane close" or "exit close", etc...
I am not able to provide the details on subscription pricing yet but it should be very affordable. More details will be announced in early to mid Feb 2006 on this along with the required hardware to receive TMC signal.

This sounds interesting. Are there plans to incorporate the TMC receiver and the GPS receiver into one unit?

Yes, there is one with TMC built-in to a Bluetooth GPS receiver. More details soon...

Very cool, thanks.
On another note, more closely related to the original topic ...
I finally got to install my Christmas edition last night. When activating it, I got a "SerialCode is not valid" error.
Now knowing whether the problem lies with BuyGPSnow or OCN, I filed a problem report with both (interestingly, they appear to be the same company?).
BTW wasn't there supposed to be a full EXE (or maybe CAB) on the SD card? All mine had was USA.map and 4 MPL files. I chose to install from DVD so that I could put a smaller region on and have the program on the SD, but it looks like I couldn't have used the easy install feature of the Christmas edition since the required files weren't on the SD card.
Unfortunately I am dead in the water (GPS-wise) until one or other of them sees my problem report and acts upon it.
This is a very bad first impression, and combined with the onerous and potentially error-prone registration process I am not likely to buy another Easy Pocket Nav/OnCourse Navigator product.

The SD card I got with my OCN5 Xmas package didn't have the installer on it, either. I did the same thing that you tried: install from DVD with only the regional map. It worked fine.
That majorly sucks that they gave you an invalid serial. What a letdown. I also bought Tomtom software and couldn't register it for a while because their registration server was down. I hate it when copy protection causes more of an inconvenience for paying customers than it does for actual pirates.
Good luck and Happy New Year!
John

Well I must be blind. I have looked in my email (including junk folders), I PMed you last night and you haven't responded, and the only email I have received is the auto-acknowledgement.
I don't see a way to see the progress of my ticket with either OCN or BuyGPSNow, and I have contacted BuyGPSnow to ask for a refund.
If yoour carrier pigeon arrives today with this mythical information on how to activate, great. Otherwise I will be returning it.
When you locked my original topic in OCN, it felt like you were trying to censor me. I certainly hope that's not the case.
Please respond quickly. Time (and my patience) is running out.
Mike
