I'm a UK user of TomTom Navigator  and toyed with the thought of opening a new thread for this...... I really hope some US Axim users here can benefit from it if they are quick to apply.
1 May 2003 - CONCORD, MA - TomTom, Inc., a subsidiary of Palmtop Software BV, today announced the beginning of open registration for field trials of the US version of its latest TomTom product for the Pocket PC 2002 OS. TomTom Inc. is actively seeking qualified participants from around the continental United States to field test this latest TomTom product. Qualified candidates will be provided with the TomTom software and hardware. Candidates will be required to provide their own Pocket PC for testing. The testing period is scheduled to begin on May 5th, 2003.
If you're based in the US and wish to take part in these trials shoot on over to BostonPocketPC.com who will be the host site for these trials.
Thanks .. Looks interesting ... Sent the them an email so we'll see if they still have any openings ...
I wonder if my background in Satellite Communications will help. That and I work at Schriever AFB, CO which is where the GPS satellites in space are controlled from. I might be able to use some military GPS recievers to test is accuracy
Hey good luck to you all - its got to be worth a couple of minutes to put in an application for the chance of getting some quality TomTom software and hardware - each participant rewarded with a free commercial product when it becomes available.
Personally would have thought the trials will last longer than a month for a company branching out of Europe into the US in this field. I posted the info here immediately after I came across it.
Hey Planet-Ed - that's pretty impressive. I take it that military standard GPS receivers are still some way ahead of what we have in the mainstream commercial world. Or do they just utilise the military beam broadcast from the satelites which is maybe more precise? Thats just a total guess - I'm only a few months in to learning about the GPS scene and all I know is that I love my Axim, TomTom Navigator and BT Socket GPS.
Letter <?> - you mean they sent you an acceptance email <?>.
Hey well-played on your good fortune if thats legit.
I realise you will be under a confidentiality agreement as part of the TomTom field testers... so you can't really give details of testing here... but hope you can at least let us know if you do receive the full testing kit. ie software and gps receiver.
Also at end of testing, when confidentiality agreement ends, would be very interested to know how it all worked out, especially your views on the TomTom software.
I'm curious what their acceptance criteria was. I applied to this quite a while ago (2-3 weeks) never got squat back as far as acceptance or not. I would at least like a "you werent what we were looking for" or something!

Thank you for submitting your questionnaire for the TomTom, Inc US Field Test. Your information has been received and will be reviewed. We will be informing all candidates who qualify for the program shortly.
I'm guessing that geographic coverage was one big factor. I just might have been lucky enough to be the first one from my state to apply (its not a populous state).

Same here but I did not expect a reply when it became apparent from the questions that they had in mind people who travel a lot, such as salesman etc..
