Solution / Workaround for CF GPS / TT5 / Dell Axim / WM5

Solution for CF GPS receiver working on AXIM X51v and WM5

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Reposted cos i couldn't change the title on original post to include solution)

After nearly 7 days of testing,

see here for detailed info

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modul...ewtopic&t=32868

I can finally report getting TomTom to work with my Dell Axim X51v with the Haicom CF multimode Hi-303III. Now this is i believe only a work around and i don't understand what is actually going on behind the scenes in the software, maybe some other with programming expertise may be able to help. Anyway solution is as follows, but please check the detailed info above for insight to the problem.

To get TomTom and a CF device to work on the Axim with WM5,

1. Install TomTom
2. Set up you home button so that it will switch to today screen. (start, settings, buttons, select button 4 and then assign Today to this, ok)
2.1 Make sure no other GPS software is running and insert CF GPS and be outside.
3. Run TomTom
4.Tap screen in middle
5.Select change preferances
6. page right
7. page right
8. page right
9. show GPS status
10. select configure
11. select other cable nmea gps
12. select the correct baud rate for your device (4800 for most)
13. select your CF device which should be something like "CF_Compact GE"
14. select Done, DO NOT WAIT FOR A SIGNAL YOU WILL NOT GET ONE, this will change once you have a fix but you cannot keep the tomtom screens in view, see further below.

Note the display should be shaded grey (no GPS signal).
15. now press the home button, which if you have set up correctly will take you to the today screen. TomTom will now get a fix, tap the little tomtom logo and you should find it will change to colour, if it doesnt go back to the today screen until it does.

The work around will only work while you do not have tomtom displayed and as soon as you display the tomtom map or anyting within tomtom application you will loose the signal. It will work with the today screen showing giving you the right instructions. I do not know what tomtom are doing whilst displaying the screen, i suspect they are polling the port which stops it from functioning in the Axim.

I hope this helps a few of you guys to get your CF devices working, it works for me.

Best of luck

I am starting to realise the extent of the problem too. I have an older Haicom 302CF (compact flash GPS) and it alternates between "no gps device" and "no signal" within the Tom Tom 5.21 application. It received a fix once but then that promptly dissapeared.

Luckily I still have my ultra-reliable Mitac Mio 168 for GPS, but I was hoping to put that on Ebay once I got the Axim... now it might be the Axim which gets slung on there for being so useless :realmad: .

Hi Axim UK

Any possibility to try my workaround above to see if it works with your older CF GPS unit?

Cheers

Hi,
I did try your workaround. I think during the Today screen it received a lock, but as soon as I tapped the little TomTom icon to go into the application it promtly lost it.

If I understand correctly you are saying that it all works as long as TomTom is in the background but you are looking at the Today screen?

When you went to the TT application had the colour changed on the map from a dull grey to a bright coloured map, if so you got a lock. You could also very quickly go to the sattelite config and see what info was there as it will display for a short while after. You could also look bottom right on the main map page, it shows the sats when locked.

Yep smack on, lets face it, you get spoken instructions and most of the time this is no problem. Its only occasionally you need to look at screen and this can probably be managed as a work around until Microsoft / Dell / TT fix it.

Once you have this lock TT will keep alive for a short while, whilst you configure destinations etc or want to go through menus.

Cheers

I admire your patience Mav, but this simply isn't going to work for me since I always use Tom Tom without sound so I can enjoy my music. With the PDA at eye level I've never needed spoken instructions.

I'm probably going to go down the route of bluetooth receiver now

Yeah i know what you mean, but i really wanted to get this CF device working. Thats why i spent so much time on it. However i may still go down the route of bluetooth myself and return the CF unit (company i purchased from said it would work with the Axim, so not "fit for the purpose").

I heard the Hloux 236 was a good unit, what one are you looking at?

Cheers

ROM upgrade to A06 DOES NOT solve this problem, still an issue.

Regards
