Configuring TomTom Nav 5.21 with CF receiver problems
I am using a Globalsat BC 337 GPS compact flash receiver on my Axim x51v (WM vA04) and I am running Tom Tom Nav v5.21. Is anyone else successfully running the same setup? If so, can you please talk me through step by step the settings you have used?
I am using the GPS Info utility that came with the card. I have set the card to COM port 4: CF-CARD-GENERIC as instructed and it is receiving GPS data, so the card is working fine.
Back in windows under Settings-->System-->GPS, Hardware tab, I have set the GPS Hardware Port to COM 4, Baud rate 4800. IS THIS CORRECT?
Secondly, under Settings-->System-->GPS, Programs tab, I am trying different GPS program ports, but none of them seem to work.
In Tom Tom, I am selecting Change Preferences--> Show GPS Status--> Configure and choosing "Other NMEA GPS, Baud rate 4800 and I get the following displayed on the screen:
GPS Is Connected to:
COMx (where x is the GPS program port I have previously set above)
CF_CARD_GE
Native IR:
COM3:
BT UART on COM5:
Serial Cable on COM1:
Looking at various forums, this seems to be a common problem. I have tried a lot of the suggested 'fixes' but without any luck. the Tom Tom support section on their web site does not list comprehensive enough instructions.
Do we just wait until Dell\Microsoft\TomTom find the solution?
Has anyone with the same set up as mine managed to get this to work?
The ports are set as per post in TT Navigator
The GPS part of WM5 is a port mapper so you should leave this set to none on both hardware and programmes tab.

No this is a mapper, so set to none

CF_CARD_GE is the one to select, then follow instructions in my other post to use the work around, you cannot look at the maps though cos it kills the signal from the GPS.
Configuring TomTom Nav 5.21 with CF receiver problems
Hi Mav,
Can I just confirm your instructions for your workaround posted here http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=111700
I quote:
13. select your CF device which should be something like "CF_Compact GE"
14. select Done, DO NOT WAIT FOR A SIGNAL YOU WILL NOT GET ONE, this will change once you have a fix but you cannot keep the tomtom screens in view, see further below.
Note the display should be shaded grey (no GPS signal).
15. now press the home button, which if you have set up correctly will take you to the today screen. TomTom will now get a fix, tap the little tomtom logo and you should find it will change to colour, if it doesnt go back to the today screen until it does.
========================
Can you please confirm that when you describe the display as "Note the display should be shaded grey (no GPS signal)" you mean the display titled "GPS Status" at the top LH corner of the TT screen with green "configure" and "done" buttons at the bottom and the compass points in the top half of the screen
And NOT the screen that is grey (with large blue arrow pointing north)with + and - zoom buttons at the top with a blue strip across the bottom.
Also, item 15, do you mean "the little tom tom logo" on the taskbar bottom RH corner?
Do you have to do this everytime you want to use TT, or is it just something you do once to set up your system and after that it works normally?
Out of interest, what version of tom tom are you using v5 or v5.21? Have you upgraded the ROM on your Axim yet or are you still using A01? As you probably know from my post, I am using TT v5.21 and WM A04 so I don't know if this is an issue.

Once you set it up its ok, you can view the tomtom maps screen occiaionally but not for long as it will loose the signal, not tested how long it takes to loose the signal.

Ive tried both and they are the same.

Originally ROM version A01, but now A06 after contacting Dell tech support who i am also conversing with on this issue. However both have same issue.
Configuring TomTom Nav 5.21 with CF receiver problems
Thanks Mav,
Will try it out tomorrow (I'm in the UK) and let you know. Going to upgrade to A06 as well. I have posted this problem on the Dell forum too but still waiting for an answer.
Let me know if you get anywhere with them.
Are you still sticking with the CF card or are you going for the easier Bluetooth receiver option. I, like many others, prefer the CF card as it is the neater option.
I've been considering going bluetooth too, but for in-car applications, CF is often the more "elegant" solution. I pop the cf GPS into my pda, plug the pda into the power socket and place it in a vent mount holder. One cable, one GPS navigation device easily stowed under the seat,no need to charge an extra item, no GPS flopping around the dash getting burnt up by the sun. I curse TomTom for cutting cf support with the 2004 edition. I curse them doubly for saying there would be a cf fix avalable in a few weeks when i called in December 2004! My suggestion? Ditch TomTom and get iGuidance!

I have Globalsat BC-337 plugged into my x51v, which, after stopping WM5's port mapper from managing access, has worked, but intermittently the GPS software running--Pocket Streets 2006, Navio and even GPS Info (utility supplied with the BC-337)--reports that it cannot find the port (COM4 in my case), or there is no GPS data coming from the port, even though the flashing red light on the BC-337 suggests the device is still getting a signal. Removing the CF card and reinserting it doesn't solve the problem. Stopping and restarting the application doesn't seem to either--I'm pretty convinced it's not the application at fault, as several have the same problem. A soft reset sometimes does. Does this suggest the card has a problem with WM5, or vice versa? I am considering sending it back, but it is good having the SD slot free for my 1Gb memory card.
I am going to try it as soon as I fugure out how to edit the registry on my X51v but I don't know if the is the equivalent to the PC regedit utility buried somewhere inside or if I need a 3rd party application.
