Hmm Problems Loading Additional TomTom 5 Maps

OK – I purchased the bundle deal from BuyGPSNow with the BT-338 & TomTom5.

It is a completely awesome GPS Solution (upgrading from an old Navman iPaq Sleeve).

Everything is working perfectly … except that I cannot transfer any additional maps to my Ax 51v. Here’s what I did:

1. Activated the GPS with the included CD.
2. Paired the GPS with the Ax.
3. Installed TomTom 5.0 to the Ax from the CDs. Activated & Registered it.
4. Installed a map of the Northeast from CD1.
5. Activated the map.
6. Started TomTom while in my house. It found the GPS Rcvr almost instantly, and I was off to the races.
7. Downloaded the latest version of TomTom (5.2.X.X) from the TomTom web site.
8. Installed the upgrade to the Ax.
9. Fired up TomTom – I’m in business.
10. Drove to work with jaws ajar– awesome 3-D interface!!!
11. Solution performs flawlessly!

OK – so, happy as a clam, I decide to load the rest of the maps onto my 1.0 gig CF card.

That’s where I hit a snag. Here’s what happened:

1. Inserted CD2 in my PC to transfer a map of the Southeast US.
2. Selected “Install additional maps.”
3. Selected the Southeast Map.
4. The transfer starts for a second, and then I get the following error: “Cannot connect to device.”
5. Hit the Retry button several dozen times.
6. Hit the Retry button with greater mouse-clicking force.
7. Cursed at monitor repeatedly. :realmad:

I’m frustrated because I know my Ax (Windows Mobile 5 & Activesync 4) is connected and synched. The install app just doesn’t see it. The first map installed with no problems.

I’m wondering whether it’s because I installed the first map with TomTom 5.0 and tried to install the second with the TomTom 5.2 upgrade.

I’m nervous that if I uninstall the TomTom Upgrade, I won’t get anything to install if the app can’t find my Ax.

Advice?

Is there any way to circumvent the TomTom install app and get the maps directly from the CDs onto my CF card?

Thanks!

I have the same problem when I try to install the initial Tom Tom program from CD. It's getting me quite frustrated. Can anyone out there help?

I ran a test. Everything worked fine on my x50v with ASync 3.8 with the exception that it is EXCRUCIATINGLY slow using ASync for this. My normal transfer method is just to put the SD/CF card in a card reader connected to my PC, put the TT install CD in, select the map needed, and select "other" transfer method/card reader and be done with it in under a minute. There is also an option to just dump the maps to a place on your PC's hard drive, but you will still need a way to get it to the PDA. Try exporting the maps to your HD then try to just copy the prepared map file over with ASync. The stuff on the TT CDs are all .cab files and maybe there is a problem with building them over the ASync connection.

If I would have to guess what the problem is, it would be a problem with the x51v and ASync >4.0 dropping the link when transferring large files. I never upgraded beyond 3.8 since I am not having problems with the older version.

My maps are version 5.0 and I upgraded my TT5 from 5.0 to 5.21.

edge777. Are you trying to install TT5 to an SD card in your Axim?
