GPS Data Shared by Notebook via Bluetooth

Can a Dell Axim X51V equipped with a GPS receiver send NMEA sentences to a notebook through Bluetooth? In so doing, I can receive GPS signal by Axim X51v and look up more detailed map on my notebook. In so doing, I don't have to carry additional GPS receivers and avoid cumbersome setup in my car. Is it possible?

With the current bluetooth stack the X51V has, I highly doubt it, X51V I believe doesn't support bluetooth networking. You can however share GPS to computers on the same local network (in your case ad-hoc) via TCP-IP and Wifi. Franson's GPSGate allows you to do that. Here is a link about it.

My main objective is to simplify the GPS installation in a rental car. In the past, when I picked up a car at an airport, it took me a long time to set it up.
1. A Big Brother antenna (http://www.tri-m.com/products/systems/bb.html) was installed on the car roof.
2. Connected it to a Garmin GPS receiver.
3. Connect the GPS receiver to a notebook via RS232 cable.
4. Connect the power inverter to supply power to my notebook.

With Axim X51v, I look forward a way to simplify the setup process. With Axim X51v's WiFi/Bluetooth, at least, I wish to do away with cables.

So the question is whether Axim X51v can feed NMEA sentences to my notebook via Wifi/Bluetooth. Microsoft Streets and Trips will be my preferred mapping software running on my notebook.

Most likely no. I know of no redirection software to retransmit that data from the Axim. If your preferred software is on your laptop, why not get a BT dongle for the laptop and just communicate directly to the GPS in the first place? If you are using a CF GPS, then get a PCMCIA/CF interface adapter for the laptop and use that directly.

have a look at gpsgate from www.franson.com. Pretty sure it can do what you want as long as you can get a BT connection set up OK

jblessing,

Thanks a lot. That's exactly what I need. It will cut down a great deal of installation and installation time during picking up and returning a rental car.
