Hi all. I'm an Axim n00b here in Canada.
I have an Etrex Vista, and a Garmin GPS18 (serial) that I've used with Nroute, and Streets and Trips on my notebooks.
I'll be wanting to use GPS with my X51v, and I'll either get a serial cable, a Bluetooth GPS, or a CF GPS (decisions decisions)
But my question is software/maps. Quality Canadian maps are somewhat harder to get than other areas. So what are my fellow Canucks using? TomTom looks promising, how are the map details?
I'm primarily interested in Alberta, but I do travel some.
OnCourse Navigator has pretty good Canadian maps, but it's weak in the more rural areas, even in Ontario. I used it to take a drive around the Toronto area and many of the smaller villages/towns were included.
Well, I am using Microsoft Pocket street in my X51, the map is good. But it does not has any instruction or route plan function (although it has these functions in PC version, but not for Pocket PC), So I do NOT like it at all. Maybe I will try TomTom Software later. it looks nice.
BTW, I am using the Pharos GPS360, it can be connected with either a CF ot BT adpter. I selected the CF because CF adpter do not need to be charged and i do not need to worry about battery issue.
I am lazy too, the CF will save me time from pair the GPS with PPC via BT.

I'm using mapopolis on my X51V. It doesn't have the nice 3d view of some other s/w out there but it has a clean look, support for VGA screen, and good routing. I live in Toronto and have used it quite extensively with no complaints. I've even taken it on a trip from Toronto to New York City with excellent results.
What's even better is that the software is free with a 10 day trial for the maps. The service is good too with an active support forum on gpspassion.com.
BTW, the screenshots on the mapopolis website look much worse than the actual product.
OnCourse Navigator 5 for road navigation and OziExplorerCE for walking maps.
I had problems that were eventually tracked to my Globalsat BT-338, but the software works well. As noted earlier, smaller rural communities and newer subdivisions may not show up -- a side effect of only annual map updates.
i have the same and my S&T is of the new 2006 version with voice command when using my laptop
it has the best and most thorough details in canada even in yukon or nwt
Mapopolis, Haicom 303III CF card and Axim X51V. Have used Mapopolis on trips to/from and across Florida, and in Ottawa, London and Kitchener, with excellent results. I use it almost daily to locate client addresses and it has been a Godsend. It is great to get free program updates without having to pay for updated maps (which may or may not have changes that justify the cost). When my Globalsat 307 packed it in after only 14 months, I swore never to buy another GPS from that manufacturer, even though their BT338 unit seems to be a market leader. VGA on the X51V was the reason I upgraded from an X5 (which ran Mapopolis flawlessly), and is *so* sweet for GPS apps.
Thanks all. I downloaded Mapopolis, looks good, though I can't get a demo map of Alberta, it is only included in the $90.00 map pack. I downloaded the Toronto demo, looks pretty good.
I wonder how detailed the Calgary map is. Pocket streets 2006 isn't much better for Calgary than the older version I had, but California is more up to date.
I'm using navteq and the bt gps from dell, works well in both alta and b.c., very detail maps and voice command, was using streets and trip before. did like it for the
laptop trip planning ,but very happy with the setup have now. use it everyday.
