Entering address - software differences

Well I’m about to decide now if to keep my axim 51v or not.
I purchased this device mainly to use it as a GPS.
But my friend gave me a deal on Magellan Roadmate 300 GPS . he is asking $150 (new one is around $450).

So I used it for 2 weeks now in Long Island. And I have hard time to enter addresses . For example I live in Centereach, NY. It won’t take it.
It will take only Brookhaven,NY. All this area here I guess is under Brookhaven and I cannot enter cities …bizarre. Really frustrating.
I need to open a map to be able to enter the correct address.

So my questions is , how is it on other software’s . :

1) Is it possible to enter Zip code ?
2) Can I scroll on the map and choose a spot and tell it to find the way there ?
3) Did you guys have any issues with entering addresses ?

I’m really having hard time entering addresses with this device, except that it works pretty good (maybe long time to find satellites on the start but not big deal)

i just wnat to know if to keep this Magellan or to go back to my original plan and use the AXIM for that

thanks
