Axim x51v and Delorme Street Atlas 2005 Handheld

1st time poster here (please be gentle!!) I got an x51v a couple of months ago and have been very frustrated with it to say the least. If it isn't a WM5 problem, then it's a firmware problem or a Bluetooth problem. I have to tell ya, I'm tempted just to fire up my old iPAQ 2215 and go back to using that!!! Sorry for the rant. Just very frustrated!!!

So here's the latest problem... I've been using Delorme Street Atlas 2005 Handheld for about a year with my iPAQ and it worked beautifully. Although it's not a great piece of software, and I'd never use it for trip navigation, it does do a good job for geocaching and hiking when combined with Delorme's Topo USA product. Anyway... here's the problem... when running on the Axim, SA2005 doesn't know about the Bluetooth GPS coming in on serial port 8. It shows port 1 (the name it displays uses cyrillic characters) and IR port 3. I also use iGuidance for road navigation on the Axim and it works well. It sees the BT GPS on port 8. Are there any tricks or tips to get SA2005 to see the GPS on port 8? I've tried the useless GPS program that supposedly allows configuration for multiple programs to use one GPS source. It didn't work (of course). (When I'm trying to connect with SA2005 I'm not also trying to use any other GPS software, so there should be no conflict.)

Any help from fellow users (or sufferers!) would be greatly appreciated.

Ya know, I really want to love this Axim, but Dell and Microsoft have sure made it difficult!

Why don't you use your h2215 for GPS only if it still works?

This might get you by until these other issues (or your product choices) are worked out.

I've seen some posts for help from Delorme from SAHH2006 users looking for WM5 compatability, and as usual dead silence from Delorme.

Just to follow up... I've given up on Delorme for the PocketPC. It's amazing to me how they can do such a grea job on their mapping software as far as creating detailed, beautiful maps and fail so miserably with their PocketPC software. They really need to take a look at their competition and get a clue!!

Product: Street Atlas USA 2006 Handheld

Hi!

When are you going to release Street Atlas USA
2006 Handheld for Windows Mobile 5.0? I have Dell X51v with WM 5.0 and
I would like to buy your product. Of course, I can sell X51v and buy X50v
but that will take time and money. If you will release version for WM
5.0
I would like to wait that.

best regards,
Vladislav

I am using Delorme Xmap for the PocketPC on my x51v which I suspect has the same basic software engine as your version. It took some fiddling to get it to work but I did finally succeed. First I configured the GPS settings in the PPC's settings to COM4 for output, listed the GPS hardware port as COM7 with a baud rate of 4800 and checked Manage GPS automatically.

Then using an old today plugin I have called GPS Sentry (which shows GPS status on the today screen) I went into it's settings and set it to COM4 and baud rate of 4800. Then I enabled GPS in this plugin which usually gives an error unable to get serial port state, the device is not ready. I just click OK to close this warning.

Now if the GPS unit is on this seems to initialize the connection allowing delorme to detect it. Open delorme and you should be able to select COM4 and select NMEA 0183 and then tap on the connect GPS icon and it should connect.

It is a little convoluted but is working perfectly for me after having done this. Before I open delorme I always have to enable GPS sentry, but then XMapHandheld pro works perfectly.

What kind of answer is THAT?

You clearly asked when compatibility will be available for SAHH2006.

They gave you the kind of brush-off answer my kid give me when I ask him if his homework is done.

I've been experiencing the same problems with DeLorme SAHH2006 since upgrading my X50 to WM5. SAHH2006 can not find the bluetooth GPS device. I sent an e-mail to the support people at DeLorme, but the response I got was "we don't support WM5". This was in early December. I've been checking the DeLorme forum site to see if an update or patch has been released, but have not seen any yet.

I've been trying several other GPS demos to get something to work the way I like. I was using my X50 for navigation with DeLorme before I upgraded (or downgraded, depending how you look at it) from 2003SE to WM5 in November. I've been working with Mapopolis recently and so far it's working good. My only option for DeLorme at present is to go back to 2003SE which is not a solution for someone with an X51 series Axim.
