Axim X51v USB GPS, Car Charger Cable??
Hello. I run a car PC in my Land Rover with the DeLorme Earthmate USB GPS and SA2004. I want to have GPS capability in my other car and I don't want to buy another receiver or move the Car PC. Does anyone know of a cable that will charge the Axim and allow a USB GPS receiver to plug in? The receiver is NMEA compliant and I will install a PPC GPS program (suggestions would be appreciated). I have seen charging/GPS RS232 cables, but no charging/USB cables. Any and all suggestion will be appreciated.
Regards,
Chris D.

Had a similar issue after buying a USB GPS receiver and decided that I wanted the Axim. Based on what I found you need to get a CF USB card. I checked the prices on it and the cost was close to the price of a BlueTooth GPS Receiver so I opted for a BlueTooth Receiver. My Laptop doesn't have BlueTooth so I bought a BT adapter for about $10.00 and now I can use the same GPS receiver (bluetooth) on my Axim and my laptop.

Another route to go would be to get a mount for the car that already has a built-in GPS receiver so if you plug the Axim into the mount it will get a GPS signal. Check out www.seidioonline.com for an example of a mount unit for the Axim with a GPS built-in.

Good luck!

Mike,
Thanks for the link to Seidio. Their GPS products look pretty enticing. I looked into the CF USb cards and I found a few options. Has anyone used the Solar Express CF USB Card? It is cheaper than the BT/power pack for my Earthmate GPS. Also, has any used the BT/power pack for the Earthmate GPS?
Regards,
Chris D.

1. you cannot connect any USB GPS with a PDA.
2. the Delorme USB GPS actually is also a serial GPS but you have to purchase the cable from Delorme (do they have X50 cable?) which must be connected to car power.
3. the BT power pack works OK. But I would advise you to buy just any other BT GPS for less cost than the power pack.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I need to pick your brains some more. I found a USB Type "A" female to RJ11 adapter ($3.00 at www.mpja.com). Just out of curiousity, do any of you who have experience with USB and RJ11 think the adapter would work to connect my Earthmate USB GPS to my Axim via RJ11 port on a Seidio powered dock? I have looked at the pinouts for USB and for the RJ11, but I can't really make a decision. The USB/RJ11 adapter is pretty inexpensive, and if it works, I could have my Axim working as my GPS for less than $100.00.
Thanks,
Chris D.

No - which was already implied.

No one else seems to make the connection for Delorme USB and X50. You have to buy the cable or BT pack from Delorme., or make one yourself, if you know how.

PC-Mobile,
I went to your website. You offer great selection of cable interconnects for handheld devices. You offer a cable kit that connects the Earthmate USB GPS (not the LT-20) to the Axim X5 and powers both devices. Other than the Axim connector, what is the difference between the X5 and the X50 that doesn't allow this GPS (which is the one I have) to communicate with the X50? I don't mean to be a pain, but would like to hear from some who apparently has a vast knowledge on the topic.

Chris D.

We seem to be the only company making PDA cables for Delorme USB GPS apart from Delorme themselves.
Because of the low demand, we have stopped producing new interfaces for the Delorme USB for new PDAs coming out over a year ago. Therefore X50 is not supported.
Hence the statement of getting the cables only from Delorme.

X5 and X50 use a completely different connector so obviously it cannot be used.

My original advice should still be the best - get a new bluetooth GPS. It is cheaper than buying cables/BT adapter for your old GPS., or fiddling with other complicated solutions.

mudy_ovl, I moved this to the GPS forum to get it more exposure to folks who might have experience with your GPS setup.

PC Mobile,
Thanks for all your advice and info. I hate to give up, but I guess I have to look at my BT GPS options. Best of luck with your cables.

Chris D.
