Trying to Understand Mapping between OCN5, TomTom & Iguidance
New to GPS, have a Axim X50, my question is about the software. Most of my use of the GPS will be over state lines, travelling 600 to 1200 miles. As I understand it OCN5 does that as a part of the XL series. Is it possible to have Iguidance and TomTom do the same thing?
Also on these trips there are multiple stopovers, vias, again as I understand it,OCN5 can have unlimited stopovers/waypoints, does the same hold true for Iguidance and TomTom?
Is it possible on each of these programs to view the actual route list in case one wants to make changes?

Thanks for your help.
iGuidance allows you to create a regional map using the states you want to include. If one of the states is separated from the rest, you'll get the main roads in the gap included as well, but not the detailed maps. TomTom I can't speak to, haven't used it in a long time.
iGuidance can have, I think, just one waypoint.
OCN does not show the route in a list format, but you can view the route on the map. THey plan to include a list of the route in an upcoming version. iGuidance does have a list display of each leg.
I don't know if tomtom 2005 is the same as 2004, but in 2004 there are no waypoints. There are regional maps that include groups of states, or you can choose individual states, drive to the border then switch maps to a different state or state group. In fact, I'm not aware of any mapping software on pdas w/waypoints. Besides, no matter how carefully you plan your trip you'll never follow it exactly. I always end up changing my trips. Appointments cancel or change times, roads close, construction, appointments that were in one location change to a different location...so you have to be open minded w/your trips.
I don't want to go off subject, but what I like to do is make a map or series of maps of my ideal route on Streets and Trips. Then at least I have a good sense of where I want to go and how I want to get there. S & T will also go online and check for construction and alternate roads. Then I use tomtom to get me from place to place.
Good luck choosing your gps system. You'll love it.

For TT5, yes. You either use a detailed region map containing a group of states, or you use the major roads map that has the entire U.S., but not small roads outside of cities.

TT5 offers waypoints (you can save the entire route for use later if you like) but I don't know how many.

OCN5 has one glaring fault - it cannot display a list of route it plotted.
True and as Jake stated, they will add that feature back some time in the future. Me --- I never used it. The ability to show the complete route on the screen and then quickly zoom in to a certain area is plenty adequate .... much more so than a route listing.
Thank you for your comments. I got an email from Iguidance that basically states that they are supposed to update to 2.2 in 3/2006 and they said they were 65% sure that they would add waypoints and that the maps would be based on Q3, 2005 and that the current version is based on Q3,2004.
OCN5 indicated they would have OCN6 released in July, 2006..........gets harder to decide which version to select. The ability to have multiple waypoints and vias is important, the difference is price is somewhat appealing.
In my trials, OCN5 can handle an itinerary of 20 interim destinations. And with the national map you never have to worry about fooling around with maps.
Since you have an X50 (not a v), OCN5 will require about 25MB free program RAM to run the XL or XXL. With a VGA device you'll need about 5MB more. If you don't provide the right amount of memory the program will throw out a memory allocation error and stop. If you do give it this memory, you can run the program all day long without any problems.

The OCN waypoint function works great for planning long trips. I set interim points to "force" the route I prefer and it is easy to zoom in and pick a spot on a city bypass or beltway to use as a waypoint instead of a real address.
But entering real addresses in OCN for destinations or waypoints is a little problematic. The backwards entry logic (state, alpha city or zip code, rd, number) is great but the data is keyed to zip codes. So if you *think* you have a valid address to enter often you will not be able to find it in OCN. Like yesterday I wanted to visit a car dealer who listed their street address as being in Arlington, VA. So I enter, VA-Arlington, and OCN can't find the street. What gives? I called the dealer and got the zip code and noticed it was different than what OCN reported for Arlington. In fact, OCN cae up with "Ft Meyer" for the city and then I was able to find the road and address.
The problem is that OCN doesn't have an "all" city option within a state as a search choice. Hopefully they will be addressing this in one of the upcoming updates. Otherwise I really like the program, and especially the waypoint feature.
