GPS that measures path

I was wondering what to use: I am doing land surveys and thinking to incorporate GPS to pinpoint various locations. Right now I take a long wire and pull it over the land.
I start at point A, then walk over to B, C etc. These points are about 20-50 meters apart. The terrain is not always flat (there can be valleys and such).
I have the Axim x51v.
I want to hook up a GPS and then mark my A, B, C by software. Is there a way to account for altitude variations?

You can use a Bluetooth GPS. I'm using a unit called i-Blue. It seems to be very accurate. There are a few programs that will do distance and area calculations. Take a look at GPS-Tuner.

I think GPS Tuner will do what you want:

Memory-Map Navigator is a very good tool for marking land plots, as well. It gives you many options for marking routes / tracks to allow ease in telling apart different sections. I don't know of any relatively inexpensive software that will account for the elevation changes, however. Most will only give you horizontal distance. With Memory-Map, you can see the elevation change over an area in the 3D mode. (The Discoverer state set gives you topo maps for a whole state, plus elevation data and a POI database, for < $75.)

Surveying may require much more accurate GPS systems than the typical commercially available unit. You might want to look at some of the Trimble systems that have increased accuracy. They get very expensive very quickly ($10K plus) as you go up in accuracy.
