Trying to understand mapping a trip

I have a X50. In the past I have used STreets and Trips on my computer, mapped a trip and then printed it out and follow those directions. Have been researching and reading forums, still confused about which program and how one would go about mapping it and which software would be most useful. Am considering Iguidance or OCN5, here is a trip that I am planning, is it possible to easiy map this on any of the programs
I apologize in advance for my ignorance .

Home in PA to Hilton Head Island, SC

A day trip from Hilton Head Island to Savannah, GA

Leave Hilton Head and go to Charleston, SC for several days

Leave Charleston, SC and go to Gatlinburg, TN for several days

Leave Gatlinburg, Tn and drive back to my home in PA

I am having difficulty understanding how IGuidance would work if I can only plot 1 stopover. Would I have to plot each leg of the trip as I leave each location, eg, Home to Hilton Head, Hilton Head to Charleston, etc? If so, how long does it take to do that or is that something that can be done on my home PC and load onto my pocket pc? As I understand it OCN5 is capable of multiple stopovers and it could all be planned at one time, is that correct? OCN5 is about $75 more than IGuidance, is the multiple stopovers the main difference between the programs?

Thanks for your help

You don't need to plan stopovers to do what you want to do. With either you:

Day 1, just before you depart. Plan from your GPS location to the address in Hilton Head. It would probably take a couple of minutes to plan, depending on the application and the speed of your cpu. Then just drive the plan, following the directions until you arrive at your destination.

Day 2, again just before you depart. Plan from GPS location to Savannah. Do your visiting, then when you are ready to return to Hilton Head, plan again from GPS location to Hilton Head.

Day 3, just before you depart. Plan from GPS position to Charleston address. While in Charleston plan from destination to destination on the fly.

Day x, just follow the same logic. Stopovers are really for when you want to either force a route through a certain point or you want to visit multiple locations all in one trip. For your plans, neither should be required.

Well as a 1 day user of the Iguidance, I can tell you that if you know in advance where you are going to stop (do have to know it advance really) you can enter your daily (major) stop as final destination on your favorite. All you need is the address. Each day you start for a new destionation, you ask to navigate to that favorite. Over the lunch time I did a short local "trip" by entering my bankl address, then my home address, then my work address. So I started from the work parking lot and ask IGuidance a route to my bank (using the favorite or you can enter the new destination on the spot in your PPC). At the bank, I ask Iguidance to show me how to get home (yeah I know the way home but this is an exercise to learn how the stuff works). Then from home I ask my my way back to work. Easy.

Since most likely at each destination you will turn off your PPC for the night, it is not really an issue of having the 1 stop possibility or not. Anyway each time you start (turn on) your PPC you will have to tell the NAV software where you want to go. It is not like the GPS will wait for you overnight.

Thank you for you replies, that gives me some insight, I see that Iguidance has a PC version included, does that make it any easier in planning the trip? Might I ask a question of opinion, what does OCN5 do or what does it do better than would merit the additional $75 that it costs in a BT bundle?

Is there a review of both of these on this site?

I have OCN and I think the main differences are (1) you can plan multiple waypoints to plan a route like you are talking about in one sitting. (2) You can have the entire USA (and Canada if you want) as a seamless map on a single SD card.

But as Jake pointed out it really isn't that difficult to enter in a new destination for each leg of a trip. And you might not need the whole US map anytime soon. So whether OCN is worth it or not is an individual decision. For me OCN is a good choice because I do straight-through drives from MD to FL and don't want to have to enter a new interim destination 4 or 5 times along the way. I like the ability to enter the waypoints in one sitting. But that's just me.... I wish more of the other Nav s/w packages would incorporate this ability. I bet most of them will eventually.
