Map confusion

I'm confused about GPS maps. I've pretty much decided to go with tomtom software which comes with US and Canadian maps. My question is are these default maps detailed or general? Am I going to need to purchase additional detailed maps for the states I am going to be traveling in? From some of the comments I have seen here about users purchasing additional maps I'd like to know what to expect before I actually make the purchase.

Hi,
The maps you purchased are detailed maps. You don't need to purchase any additional maps. The current version of TomTom allows you to load several states within an area.

The only additional charge I'm aware of is when TomTom release updated maps you have to pay around $50.00 for a set of the CDs.

Tom Tom's price seems to be pretty reasonable. I am currently using IOGEAR and they told me this week that map updates would be $100 bucks from their source. I am not that thrilled with it. I have played with Tom Tom but ahve been unable to get it to pair with my IOGEAR GPS so I might be faced wiht buying a completly new outfit....but I am hooked on GPS.
