How to release com 1?

Hi,

I'm using x50 with Seidio G4850 ( with built in GPS).

The problem is: every morning when i plug the axim into the cradle, my TomTom cannot find the GPS.

I read about it, and i guess the Com 1 port is not released - and so the axim cannot recognize the GPS.

When i connect to the ActiveSync and disconnect from it - there is no problem connecting the GPS ( right after disconnecting from the ActiveSync).

The question is:
Is there a release command = which will allow me to release Com 1?

I tried soft resets - but this did not help.

Many thanks,

Omer UK.

Go to Start-Settings-System-Memory-Running Programs and manually stop Active Sync.
You could also download this free app. http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/downloads.asp?id=21 to make sure your Ax is seeing the GPS when in the cradle.
Mine wasn't, and the Seidio has been returned for repair/replacement.
Hope this helps.

Activesync is trying to use COM1 therefore conflicting with your serial GPS mount. If you have an X50v, whenever you remove your PPC from the cradle, just kill ActiveSync (which is running in memory). Use a task manager like MagicButton to easily access which programs are running in memory and kill Activesync.

If you're using an X51v, I don't believe the above method works to kill Activesync as it will come back after 15 mins (WM5 bug), and you need to use this fix/workaround -> http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=112638

the problem is not with the activeSync

Hi,

the problem is not with the activeSync. the activeSync is the solution!.
The problem happens from time to time - when i disconnect the axim from the car mount - when i plug it back in - com 1 is occupied. the only way to release it, is to connect it to the activeSync, and then remove it from the activeSync. if i do that, the port is being released.

this is driving me crazy.
Dell support says there is nothing they can do. I really dont know what else can i do.

Ah, now I understand. Everyone usually has the problem I mentioned above, and its pretty common. You have the reverse problem. I've been using my Axim X50v for quite awhile, and I thought I've heard of all the problems associated with the Axim X50v. This one is new to me. Is there a diff between your X50 and a X50v? What ROM version are you running?

The problem is still Activesync. It's capturing COM1 and not releasing it. Restarting it and then disconnecting gets it to release COM1 properly. A/S grabs COM1 whenever it sees any data there, not just when it sees valid data, so any signal, including GPS, will assert Activesync. You have to kill A/s, then start the GPS software first, get it looking at COM1 to block A/S and then connect the GPS, or cradle the Axim.
