How to tell what altitude I'm at?
I currently have an X5 and I use a Haicom HI-303III with TomTom 5 for navigating the streets. However as the weather is getting warmer, it's time to venture back out onto the hills. What I'm looking for is a piece of GPS software that will work with the HI-303III to allow me to see my current lat. and long. along with my spped direction and height. I know that Tomtom will give me position, speed and direction but it will not give me my altitude.
Another nice to have would be the ability to display my position on the OS system (for the UK)
If anyone can suggest something suitable, it would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Barry

Not sure about TomTom but with iGuidance it has a menu for GPS Info which provides you with Latitude, Longtitude, altitude, your current speed and the number of satelites that it is picking up. As well as my Holux GPSlim 236 came with a utility software that shows the same thing. Try looking in the menu for GPS info with your TomTom.

Are you driving or walking? Memory-Map OS will give you your position on the OS maps (in the Brit Nat Grid format). It will also give you your altitude (as determined by the GPS) and your elevation based on the OS map (which is generally MUCH more accurate than the GPS determined vertical position). IT is not street software, but is great for walking / hiking.

If you need the altitude to be accurate, don't rely on GPS. It'll get close enough if you're just curious though. Personally, I like using GPSTuner with my topo maps while hiking.

GPS doesn't know the direction you are facing, only the direction you are travelling. So the answer is "no" to your question. Bu ti fyou are mvoing, most GPS software will show the direction of movement as a True direction.

This might be what you are looking for:
http://www.vitotechnology.com/en/pro...vigatorii.html
I have used it and it works quite well, plus the plugins are neat. It also has a plot feature where it can plot your route on just a blank grid.
neat stuff and is simple to look at/use

Check to see if there is anything on the disk that came with your GPS receiver. A lot of them have free software that will give you this info. Another good one is GPXSonar which was created for Geocaching.

There is no way to obtain an azimuth from a GPS Receiver alone. Think of the antenna as a single dot on the center of your display. Even though the satellites are at different positions in space, this single dot would be unable to determine which signal is coming from which ditection. Now if your antenna was like 3 dots on your display, which it is not, you could calculate the azimuth through triangulaion.
