AXIM X51v, GPS and Australia
So there I was at the local gadget shop and was looking at Microsoft [insert product title for street directions here] and I thought about how nifty it would be to have GPS and generate directions on the fly and all that. So I started looking at GPS recievers (wired, bluetooth or CF) and software.
Then it hit me. None of the stuff on the shelves covered anything but North America. As of April 10th, I'll be living in Australia permanently. So, what software should I be looking at for AUSTRALIAN streets and maps? Particularly Adelaide, Australia.
PS: Bonus points if the software groks Adelaide's bus system. :D

Lots of point of view here I'm sure... but not too much choice in Australia. Starting point at least-Look at Destinator PN (soon to release Destinator 6). Currently Lots of good deals (you're in the US?) where you are check out buygpsnow.com for package of BT receiver and Destinator with Australian maps (will cost about US $80 more compared to US for Aussie maps). HTH

Destinator for Australia
Destinator Australian maps work fine (generally) on my X50v. Don't know about the 51. buygpsnow.com sent me a bluetooth gps with an american plug even though the box indicates an Autralian plug is available, so you might check on that if you order. Also buygpsnow told me that updates come direct from Destinator, but there is nothing on the Destinator website about updates.

Yeah, I'm a Yank, but my wife wants to move back home to be near her family, and I said, "Live in Oz? Heck yeah!"
Thanks, both of you, that's the best information I've been able to get. Most people I've talked to look at me sideways when I say that I need Australian maps instead of US (not many people here understand that there are places outside of the US and Western Europe).

You can also look at Garmin for the maps. See attached JPG for coverage of Australia.

Well :) I for one would be wondering what the Coral Sea is doing in the Pacific Ocean but that's probably just me..... LOL someone at Garmin failed geography at school ....
Edit- but the maps are otherwise not bad don't let my miserable attempt at Aussie humour put you off.
@ Louis: sorry no experience with Adelaide's bus system but tell you what South Australia's wine alone will make your move worthwhile !! Input destination : Barrossa Valley......

I couldn't agree more. Coral Sea should be higher around Port Douglas... :-D
I think the mistake is probably made by all the following e.g. GPS data suppliers, Telstra, Sensis, and Garmin for not checking up.

X51v GPS recommendations please.....
Hi - have copied this (my own reply) from another forum, as I feel this is the better place to be asking such questions....
Thanks for you replies. However, I seem to be getting more and more confused despite having read the GPS section on Aximsite and having visited both the buygpsnow.com and the Destinator websites.
Can anyone please recommend a good setup for use with my Axim x51v. I would prefer to use a CF card receiver, and I have heard that I have to use Destinator software due to the mapping for Australia being so limited. However, what I need is some advice, as follows:
1. Once and for all, does Destinator PN work with WM5 or not??
2. Out of the following CF card receivers (Globalsat 337, Haicom 303 III, Haicom Hi-305, Haicopm Hi 305 III) which is the best for general foot / vehicle use?
3. With the Haicom 305, I have heard that the built-in SD card slot will not work runningWM5 - is this true??
Thank for your help. Just trying to make sure that I understand exactly what I am buying before I take the plunge....
Thanks.
