TOMTOM Software vs. Dell Navteq
Just getting started in the Axim and am interested in buying a GPS system for it. Is their anything better than the Dell Navteq? I want it mainly for street addresses, finding hospitals, and places to eat. Any recommendations?
Thanks, Rick

Rick: I have TomTom Navigator with all the maps loaded on my Dell Axim 50. I have it seated in an Arkon holder in the car. It keeps the Axim powered and also brings up the volume. We love it, and use it all the time. It will tell you where to stay, where to fill up the car, and where to eat.

Depends on where you want to use it. Dell Navteq is much better in Canada, but tomtom has a much nicer interface. Tomtom is pretty good for the states and western europe though.

Let me be a little more specific. I travel 14 southeastern states and call on all hospitals and surgery centers. I need to know how to get to hotels and would like to be able to pick eat places by type of food, i.e., BBQ or Seafood, etc. Will the Dell Navteq system do this and if not which one one be the best?
Thanks again guys.

I haven't used the Dell package, but I've been told it's a re badged iGuidance which I have used. iGuidance(Dell?) has more accurate and up to date maps. For me, iGuidance is more stable. TomTom seems to have a larger POI database and while the maps seem old, the POI's seem more up to date. TomTom has a slicker more finger friendly interface and adds a few more toys like additional voices and a so far less than usefull traffic feature. Either will probably suffice for you but there is no one "best" package. You mention that you travel in the south east, I've found TomTom's maps to be particularly bad in Florida.

I have tomtom nav 2004 w/an x50v. It was great w/a non vga device, but since switching to a vga device it sucks. Every 38 to 45 minutes it freezes. I understand that problem was fixed w/the newest version but I would check that out first.

The tomtom maps are easy to use and finger friendly and have good POIs, and I found you can add more POIs yourself, though I've never done it. The newest version also can use your outlook database to find places to navigate to, so you can put your hospital addresses in it.

I originally did my research like you about one year ago and chose tomtom b/c at the time I thought it was the best out there, but all the software systems are built from the same couple of map systems, so the real differences are just in the interfaces and the POIs and user friendly features they add. Since you can't demo nav software I've never tried any other, but I like Tomtom, I just have to do soft resets when I use it.

Can I suggest Pocket CoPilot, by www.alk.com.
I like just a little more than tt, but having with me MS Streats&Trips to look up some addresses is essential.
I drive about 50k a year for medical software comp. Love the way CoPilot guides and how it routes, but it has shortcommings in POI department. Oh, almost forgot, CoPilot looks really good on my x51v.

I'm using iGuidance. It works great most of the time. Route is accurate, and recalculation is scarily fast. (Most of the time faster than my brain!) Only complain is that the 3D mode is really bad. Also, it isn't easy to play the detour game to avoid traffic. But you probably don't need your GPS if you are so familiar with the area anyway.

I had the Dell software on initially on my X51 and then tried TT5 at the same time, I found the Dell tracking was about 20m out and your position only seemed to update every 3/4 sec. I much prefer the GUI with TT5 and it is certainly more accurate in tracking, however it has tried to take me down a couple of farm roads and one ways in the short time I have had it.
Overall I prefer TT5 although I have not much experience going around the country yet (UK), although in a couple of weeks I will be in Australia on business so that will probably be the biggest test.

cheers
