Delorme and WM5

Hi!
I'm using Axim x50v with Delorme Earthmate Blue Logger GPS ans Street Atlas USA 2006 Handheld.
The software supposedly is not working with WM5, however, I've heard there are some beta versions of the patch already available.
Did anyone hear about it or figured out how to make the GPS work with WM5?

Thanks!

Sorry dude, you should have read more here before buying. I made the same mistake. I love my BlueLogger, but the DeLorme software is junk. Save yourself a bunch of frustration. Deinstall the program now, and destroy the DVDs or CDs now and never look back. The faults of this software are just to numerous to list. Delorme's PC software is pretty good, but avoid the handheld software like the plague. I complained about it's many faults to DeLorme. Their response was that I did not understand how hard it was to program for Window's Mobile and the try the PC version. Funny OnCourse Navigator, iGuidance, Mapopolis, PocketMap, Tom Tom and Destinator to name a few, have no problems creating good street navigation programs.

While Delorme does have it's limitations I find it works quite well for me on a x51v. The one problem is getting it to work with GPS. Fortunately I have a today plugin called GPS Sentry which is designed to show GPS status. I have found if I enable this first and then open Delorme it will find the receiver and works fine.

And this is what amazes me and convinced me GPS navigation software is definately a personal choice. I had the 2005 version of StreetAtlas HandHeld. The 11 mile route to work took about 11.5 minutes to compute in SAHH and in OCN5 it takes about 20 or 30 seconds. They have improved the routing engine in the 2006 version, but it is still slow compared to other programs. You needed to keep the map size small in the 2005 version as it got slower the larger the map was. I live in Kansas City, MO. The whole KCMO metro area made SAHH crawl, so I had to split it into 2 maps. I have the entire USA (lower 48) and Canada in a single map in OCN5 and it is not a problem. Again it is suppposed to be improved in the 2006 version, but you still can not have a single map that large. I tried rerouting by missing a turn on purpose. By the time it had finished rerouting, I was past where it wanted me to turn to get back on course. Again improved in the 2006 version, but still a problem. Last but not least was the OLD map data. SAHH 2005 tried to route me over a railroad crossing on the way to work that was removed when I was in high school (I am 49) in favor of a new underpass. OCN5, Mapopolis, Google Map, Yahoo Map, Mapquest. Microsoft Streets and everything I have seen except SA does not have this railroad crossing anymore. Again they have updated many roads in the 2006 version, but I wonder if that error is still in there. If you want to see check out in 2006 look for 24 Hiway in Independence, MO between Brookside and Ash. The hiway use to go straight, but now curves south and goes under the underpass and then curses back north. I could go on and on, but I now have a good street navigation program and DeLorme lost a customer for life.

I use OCN for street navigation but use delorme to display USGS quads and my own registered images. It also allows me to import and display dxf files which I don't believe anything else but some of the more costly GIS software allows. It definately is not for everyone but I find it quite useful.

Trust me I understand, because OCN is definately not for everyone either. I like it, but many people are having problems with it. I am yet to find somebody who has actually used Memory-Map Navigator and does not like it though.

With WM5 on an x51v I find I have to exit my today plugins and then soft reset the device to clear enough RAM for OCN5 to run consistently for long periods of time. It seems to be a bit of a memory hog. If I don't do that it usually crashes out after a half hour or so.

Question

Has anyone tried the newer version, 2007, with WM5?

Yes - it still sucks. Sync'ing routes and maps from the desktop is difficult and the display is very difficult to see while driving(co-pilot required). Route tracking is problematic also - keeps announcing non-existant turns.

I much prefer Destinator6 - altho' it lacks the ability to custom(via) route that SAUSA has.

Amen. While I enjoy the Delorme hardware, their software was horrible. I had one version that I bought bundeled with my BT GPSr, and I returned it to them for a refund becuase it was basically unusable.

I'll stick to ALK CoPilot or TomTom, thanks.

Delorme should just quite making handheld software until they get some decent handheld programers. I have not tried the new version, but there are still complaints on Delorme's forum. I wish I had found their forum before I bought, but hindsight is 20/20. The 2005 version of was enough to scare me away forever. It is impressive what iGo, TomTom, iGuidance, Destinator, Garman, etc. can do. Maybe Delorme should consider hiring some of these company's programers. These programs are like college level classes while Delorme has moved from preschool to elementary school.

I was looking at IGuidance, but I retired my X50v (it had a power connector problem) and moved to a Cingular 8525. It uses the microSD card and will not use one larger that 2 GB. OCN6 came out just before I made the switch to the 8525, so I switched to it. The large map size of iGuidance V3 scared me away. I know V4 took care of it, but OCN6 has me hooked. You should read Jake's review of OCN6. It is base on iGo instead of the MobileNavigator OCN5 was based on. Memory problems are gone. The user interface is very intuitive. I have stated I am not a fan of the 3D display on the forum many times. Well that is not true anymore. OCN6 has made a convert out of me. I can hardly wait until the next version is out. All 3D displays are artificial as there is no elevation data in them. That is suppose to change in the new verson of iGo. Imagine being able is see if the road ahead goes uphill or downhill. Not something I need normally, but it will be handy when towing my TrailManor travel trailer.
