Connecting Axim X51V WM5 to Bluetooth GPS (FGPNBT03)
[edit] The GPS Device I'm using is actually a Fuzion (FTech) FPGXBT02
Having spent most of the day trying to get my new BT GPS and X51V to talk to each other, I thought I'd share this with you:
From a soft reset (i.e. BT off, no devices or Comports set)
Turn the GPS on – GPS goes into discover mode. (The Axim finds the BT GPS even without this - yours may not)
In the Axim’s, Bluetooth Settings:
/Mode - enable BT and allow discovery
/Devices - search for New Partnership
> should find BT GPS (or similar) - select it and click Next
> enter passkey (usually 0000) – click next
> should find a serial port service - do not tick the box , click Finish
/COM ports
select New OUTGOING port - it should list the BT GPS – select it and click next
Choose a comport (I used COM7) and unchecked secure connection (not sure what difference this makes)
COM ports now lists BT GPS (COM7)
Start TomTom (select other Bluetooth GPS device and select COM7)
or other GPS application. (i.e. GPSinfo – select COM7)
The above works for me every time
I have the WM5/Settings/GPS set to :
/GPS program = none
/Hardware = none
/Access = unchecked
I don’t know what the GPS control panel is supposed to do, but none of the settings seems to make any difference. It doesn’t redirect the above GPS comport (COM7) to any other port, nor does it allow multiple programs to see the GPS data. It seems to be another part of WM5 that’s broken!
[edit]
To reconnect to tomtom. I start TT, touch on the satellite bars to bring up the satellite reception page, touch the config button - select other BT device - select com7. The satellite bars turn blue after a few seconds, indicating the gps has locked.
To reconnect the GPS for other software, I have to select the BT GPS device in bt settings then refresh the services.

Reason: update
Now, the GPS device pairs correctly, so all I have to do is; switch on the GPS, start TT,the bluetooth is automatically enabled, and wait 15 to 20 seconds for a satellite lock.
You are mistaken about the GPS control panel. I have used my BT GPS with three different programs simulataneously using this feature. (Before, I had to use GPSGate to multiplex.) With some programs, you have to ensure you have the latest update to work with it, however.

I use my Rikaline 6033/DestinatorPN combo nightly.... my gps configuration in the settings menu:
GPS Program Port - COM 8
GPS Hardware Port - COM 7
Manage GPS Automatically is checked
6 months ago.....when lots of us were really struggling with getting programs to work under WM5..... we were trying everything under the sun to get things workin'...... now it's almost getting easy(lots of thanks to the people on this site). Buy a program.....install it.....IT WORKS!!!
After getting the latest Navteq update and a working Dell bt receiver everything seems perfect compared to other peoples experience with other systems.
There is no need to set anything up and no need to reboot. Just start up the Navteq sotware, it turns on bt and automatically connects to the receiver.
Saying the above, it was a difficult process getting there because the cd supplied did not work on X51v, I had to download the update, and the first Dell bt receiver I received was faulty.
The Dell bt receiver with European maps, car mount and cables can be got for £80 including postage.
Well, I have the Dell GPS software, but this is all I do.
1) Turn on GPS
2) Turn on Axim
3) Press wireless key (I have it to start BTSwitch
4) Press Notes key (I have it start program)
5) Press I accept
6) Drive!

Setting the PassKey to 0000 was what I was missing.. It's amazing to me you can spend hours trying to figure something out that should take seconds... one of the problems of the lack of documentation from GlobalSat...
It sounds like this is the problem I am having. I can get the GPS to work with programs on the "outbound" port, but with the GPS utility it doesn't work no matter what combination of troubleshooting I do. Just like you say, it doesn't redirect.
Recap of what I've tried:
Started out with a fresh hard reset of A12. Had the GPSInfo app, iGuidance v3, and a few other programs ready to try out. I went by the steps above, and the way I've tried before of Pairing>Setting Outbound and then the Settings-System-Gps settings.
I set it to com 7 to use as the outbound "hardware" port. I went in and set com8 as the application port, 7 as hardware on tab 2, and set it to manage gps access.
In GPSInfo for example, I open com8, and no information appears. I move it over to com7, and it works. I've also tried it in iGuidance, setting it to com8, and it doesn't say that there isn't a GPS device there, it just 'accepts it' but doesn't get any information. And then trying to use 2 programs on com7 fails to work also.
Once you decide to use GPS redirection in WM5 "Settings" you can not connect to your GPS on the hardware port with the applications. You must choose the application port you picked in the GPS redirector. The first program you start must be WM5 aware. After that even the non WM5 aware programs will see the GPS on the application port. So try opening GPSinfo on com7,,,,leave it open,,,,move over to iGuidance,,,connect to com7,,,,that should work.
(or 8 if that was your application port,,,make sure you managing it automaticly 3 tab under GPS)
I switch on my Dell bluetooth receiver, start Navteq software and the software automatically turns on bluetooth and connects.
I can even turn the Dell off and back on again and it usually reconnects to the receiver.
Originally I set up a partnership but this was a mistake, it works much better if you remove all partnerships and allow the Navtech software to establish the partnership.
Now that it is working, seems to be much more reliable and stable than other GPS software I have seen (e.g. TomTom)
Thank you for a clear and methodical walk through of how to set up Tomtom 5.2, WM5 and BT 338. Having wasted 3 weekends on this, your discussion sorted the problem straight away.
No matter what I did I could not, for the life of me, pair my Oncourse BT-359 GPS with Axim. I tried probably 20 times, 5 hard resets !
The Widcomm stack paired two devices on the first attempt. I did have to do some registry editing to get rid of RNDIS problem but that was just a 5 minute deal and instructions on this site were perfect.
I can't help but wonder if Dell has purposedly crippled BT on Axim so that only Dell GPS receiver could be used.
