CF GPS is shot? PDA's problem? Plz help!!
I purchased the HAICOM hi-303III CF GPS about 2 months ago from buygpsnow.com. It was working very nicely. After almost 2 weeks not touching it when I try to use it again it stopped working. Originally, when it worked, it was using COM4. Now when I insert the CF GPS the PDA just won't detect any new COM devices. I even did a factory reset and it still won't recognize any new COM devices. The LED on the GPS unit doesn't even flash anymore.
I sequested a RMA and the tech told me this is a working unit, based on them they've got it to work. So they just sent back the same unit back. I gave it another try and still can't get it to work.
Anyone has any idea what might be happening? I've e-mailed bygpsnow.com and haven't got a reply yet.

What software are you using? Is it set for COM4? The card won't be activated until the software triggers it.

I've used GPS info, cemonitor, gps tweak and none of them would detect COM4. Usually with GPS tweak, if I start the program and insert the GPS, it would say new deviced detected on COM4.
When I hard reseit Ive also used the built-in GPS to set the hardware to COM4 and set software map to NONE and it still doesn't work.
Just want to mention that my 2gig CF card and 4gig microdrive works perfectly fine.

Ok, just a shot in the dark. It might be in SiRF mode running at 38400 baud. But check out all COM port and baud rate combinations.
Use CEMonitor, and select a COM port, and for each COM port, choose a BAUD rate (from 4800-57600). Run thru each baud rate.
For each setting above, on the screen for CEMonitor, look at the bottom and check to see if it indicates NMEA or SiRF.
If it says SiRF, then something happened to switch your NMEA to SIRF on your device. Then you'll need to switch it back from SiRF to NMEA.

After I plugge in the CF GPS unit, I only see the following com port listed in CE monitor:
Serial COM1
BTUart COM5
IrCOMM COM3
IrDA COM2
Before when it worked, I rembere there will be a COM4 listed with something like GenericCF.
Are you suggesting going through each of those port? Well I tried all of them with 38400 and nothing happened.

silvscorp,
what is your PDA? If its an Axim X50v, the COM port used for my Holux CF GPS was COM6. Try VisualGPSce instead. And yes, try each port and baud rate.
And in your original post, you mention you did a factory reset. Did you do it on the CF GPSr? If you did, what program did you use?

Thanks for all the feedbacks.
Mine is axim x51v. When I first got the GPS unit, it showed up on COM4. How can I factory reset the CF GPS if none of the program can even detect this device?
I've dled and tried the virtualGPSce program you mentioned and it only shows up COM 1,2,3 and 5. I've tried all the baud rate for each of them and no avail.

Dell Axim X51v uses COM 4 for CF GPS
Have you tried changing the Baud Rate ?
I spent a full week troubleshooting My Dell Axim + WM5 + Holux Compact Flash GR 271 GPS as I had COM Port problems, loaded a bunch of software (GPSView, GPSMonitor, GPSDash, Winfast, etc....), and it seems that 3 things made the GPS receiver work :
1- downloading the latest Dell Axim ROM A01 (french)
2- adding the " ElSerial.dll " instead of " Serial.dll " on Windows , then modifying the Registry accordingly.
3- Contrarly to the Holux notice that was indicating 4800 as a Baud rate, I switched to 38400
....and it works perfectly now

On my Holux CF GPS, you know you got the correct COM port when the LED lit up. If your Haicom CF GPS has an LED indicator, check if the LED light comes on. If it does, you have the right COM port even if the baud rate is incorrect.
It seems your issue is again the result of another X51v + WM5 + CF GPS issue, another bus timing issue. Pity that MSFT or Dell is taking so long to correct this problem.

um..well I am not sure what the problem is because it did work for me when I 1st got the GPS. The LED would light up right after I insert it to the PDA regardless.
I am just suspect the GPS is broken, but the guys over at buygpsnow.com saying they've tested the unit and it worked for them.

I bought a Haicom 305III from them that wouldn't lock (took 5-7 minutes outside in clear sky) using my Toshiba or X50V that they insisted was fine. I finally got them to refund the money and bought a 303III from Semsons and it's worked fine since. GPS is truly not a user friendly thing sometimes.

CF GPS with X51v
I used x50 with HOLUX GM270 CF GPS. Then X50 died on me so I bought X51v with WM5 what a piece of sh...t!
1) Belkin software does not work so I had to buy Tomtom.
2) I still can not make CF GPS to work.
3) I spent hours making WiFi to work and it is still unstable!!
I noticed a couple of things with CF GPS
1) It works for a few seconds (sometimes) after I pull it out and then plug it back (hence I don't think that port # settings are the issue).
2) With x50 led was on only when you "hit" the gps. It is always on with x51v
Could it be a issue with WM5 GPS managing software ?
On X50 CF GPS used to be at the port 4, I noticed that tomtom offers me only port 3, does it mean that there is a device on Port 3 or TT just expect to find GPS on that port?
BTW I manage to make tomtom to work with BT Belkin GPS but it is slow and I need an extra cable in the car.
