Help! 51v "sees" BT GPS but no GPS data

I know that my new 51v is seeing the GPS because the name pops into the partnership screen. However, I never get any GPS data to show up. The receiver is blinking the green light (indicating GPS lock) but no go.

I thought that when I launched the Dell GPS program, the maps would pop in and start working (I'm a little naive! :) ) Do I need to go through the "partnership" and "secure password" routine EVERY TIME I want to use this?

Please help! I know that the com ports are messed up. I already deleted the partnerships I had. Also, the help screen talks about "option" screens that don't exist!

Did you load the maps for your area? In the help portion of the Dell GPS program it tells you how to delete and allow the program to find the GPS transmitter again. once it finds it it will be found every time the program starts, no future pairing is needed after that one time. Be sure that in setting the Axim has manage GPS automatically.

I loaded the maps. I followed another users directions. Still no luck. I keep getting the "unable to obtain GPS. Check you bluetooth and GPS receiver" message.

I can't find anything that says how to delete and find the GPS again. I'm fairly confident that the AXIM is set correctly. It does see the GPS in the new partnership area. It just won't get the GPS data.

What do I do? Is there someone to call at Dell about this?

Double check the GPS comm settings. Make sure you have an incomming com port assiciated with your GPS device (in the Bluetooth settings). Then make sure the correct com port and baud rate specified in the GPS app that you are using. Just because you have a BT lock does not mean the two devices are communicating. Note, some GPS programs do this all for you and you dont need to worry about it, but others need you to do all the setup so its best to do it all yourself just to make sure your GPS will work with all GPS apps.

No you do not need to establish a new partnership and specify the secure password every time. Once set up, when you turn on your GPS and the BT on your axim then it should connect automatically.

Aximsitebluetoothicon GPS Settings

I have both hard connected (cradle) GPS and Bluetooth. The com port settings are very different. For my Bluetooth, I use COM7, 9600 Baud, 8-N-1. Make sure you know what serial port connection your BT is using with your GPS AND that your GPS application is set up to use the proper GPS datum standard AND has the com port interface set correctly.

One thing I found with the BT GPS on the 51v, if you are using the bundled software, is that you shouldn't pair the GPS manually, just use the gps software itself to find your bt unit.

GPS now communicating with Axim

Thanks! it's working now. I found a post on the Dell forum that fixed it immediately. I think that the issue was simply switching the ports in the GPS control panel.

Here's the link to that thread:

Question: I put in address to a location I am traveling to. The GPS almost always gives me a route that is not the best way to get there. The map will readjust but it still tries to get me to U-turn or turn left in 500 feet to get me back to the original route. Is there anyway to shut her the heck up? haha I would like to have the map adjust to my new path and stay that way. Is this possible? Any other tricks to following the routes that I should know? I already changed the map to follow the route rather than North at the top. This is just like the GPS maps in our plane. Much easier to follow.

What else should I do?
