i.Trek M3 car power adapter.

Hey all,

I recently purchased the i.Trek M3 Bluetooth GPS for use with my X51v and Tom Tom 5. Needless to say I am extremely happy with this setup. I also use GPS Gate which is an awesome utility for using multiple programs with the single GPS stream.

First of all, I haven't purchased a car adapter for my axim as of yet. Read on...

Well the other night I was looking over my gear and messing with cables and such. I noticed that the car power adapter for the i.Trek M3 has the exact same plug size as the wall charger for the x51v. (the end that plugs into the cable to axim adapter)

I thought to myself that it would be cool if the i.Trek charger actually worked to charge the axim. So I thought I would test the power output to see what the two power sources are actually putting out.

The axim charger is rated at 5.4 volts. The i.Trek M3 charger is rated at 5.0 volts.

Using a volt meter, I first tested the axim wall charger plugged into a power inverter in my truck. While rated at 5.4 volts, 5.62 volts was the acutal reading.

Next I tested the i.Trek M3 charger from the powerpoint in my truck. Rated at 5.0 volts, the acutal reading was 5.41 volts.

So the i.Trek M3 charger is closer to what the axim should have than the charger that came with the axim (at least when it's plugged into an inverter)

With these numbers I decided to test the i.Trek M3 as a powersource for the Axim, and it works perfectly.

Now I am no electronics expert and I'm not all that versed in voltage. But from what I can tell the thing is a perfect fit.

So long winded post asside. If you have the i.Trek M3, you now have a car charger for your x51v.

By the way, if i'm crazy or i'm going to blow up my axim, or my truck... let me know.

The Oncourse BT-339 comes with a "y" cable for charging a PDA while charging the GPS. Besides slight differences in accessories and face plate, the M3 (Semsons), BT-339 (BuyGPSnow) and Globalsat BT-338 are identical.

i.trek M3, GlobalSat Bt-338, OnCourse BT-339 are the same units. buygpsnow ships BT-338 and BT-339 with Y splitter cable to use same adapter to power both GPS and Axim. Depending on amperage capacity of adapter, it should power both units. It may take a long time to charge a dead Axim battery while running both units.
