Holux GR-271 CF GPS Receiver Troubleshooting

Although I do not have ab Axim or other Pocket PC, after reading the review of the Holux GR-271 and how it worked on a laptop, I've decided to purchase this CF GPS receiver. I have a Fujitsu P-1510D, a tablet PC running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. I have followed all the setup instructions, but the software cannot see or communicate with the receiver. System Device Manager can see the GPS receiver on COM3, but software cannot access or communicate with the GPS receiver - have double checked the GPS communication settings (NMEA 4800 COM3) and still no luck .... has anyone tried a similar setup and has any idea of what the issue may be? The LED light on the receiver does not come up when the software is installed. If uninstall all the Holux software and driers, and re-insert the receiver into the CF drive, the LED on the receiver lights on, and Windows tries to install this CF as a memory card! The Holux site is very thin on the ground in terms of troubleshooting; and in fact, the Holux GR-271 doesn't even appear in their product list. Did I just buy a lemon?? Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Rogerio,

The Holux GR-271 is a simple CF GPS device. If the PCMCIA driver exists for your OS, then it should work. Seeing that you have a WinXP Tablet PC Edition, I am not sure what's different from a regular WinXP OS.

Theoretically, all WinXP system comes with the ability to have drivers for most products and here is a link for drivers -> http://www.holux-uk.com/Products/gm-270u/download.shtml

Be careful when using SiRFDemo.

One thing I can think of to test is check the baudrate. Do not assume it is at 4800. Check at higher baudrates first.

Your device should be NMEA and not set to SiRF. If it set to SiRF, you'll need to convert it back to NMEA using SiRFDemo. Just be extermely careful when using SiRFDemo as you can turn your GPS into a brick if you use commands that you are not sure off.

Hi Lawman

Thanks for your advice, I have downloaded the drivers for the GR-270 but didn't work. Unistalled the whole thing, re-installed and uninstalled again ... for several times. In the end, I did use again the drivers that came on the CD-Rom with the receiver, and *** miracle *** windows finally accepted a driver for the receiver! System Device Manager still shows the GPS CF Receiver as a "CF Card", but at least the the software now can communicate with the receiver. And you were right, the baud rate is not what it comes on the manual .... it works only at 9600 baud, on COM4. Unlike you, I didn't get a fix on my window of the 39th floor of a downtown Chicago tower, but I've run quickly outside to the open, and attempted to get a fix - the receiver took a good 5 minutes and still did not get a full fix, only managed to get about 2 satelites. As I was getting cold, tired and hungry I gave up ... am happy that it works at last ! Am leaving for Europe tomorrow, and will attempt to get a fix in Switzerland ... no high-rise buildings there and plenty of clear skies! :) Thanks again for your advice.

Cheers,
Rogerio

Great that it works. Also, all GPSr take different times when moving great distances from the last known location. Give it 5+ minutes to get your location. Some GPSr works quicker at locating your present location when moved than others.

Cheers, and have a safe travel to Switzerland!

271 with Axim x50v?

I just purchased a Holux GR 271 and it works with my Latitude X1, but I can't get it working with my x50v. Any driver advice? Thanks.

The Holux GR271 should work right off the bat with your X50v. What OS are you running, and what issue do you see when you say its not working?

My Holux 271 installed on the 51v using the supplied CD no problems. Only thing you have to do is have your Axim connected via ActiveSync while doing the PDA installation. I know the 271 will not install if you don't have it connected and the installation program does not set up the GPS for installation upon the next ActiveSync connection.

Ronbo,
I also have a 51V and just bought the Holux gr-271 but I can seem to get it going. I have the system setting, GPS program port set at COM1 and the GPS hardware port set at COM4, Baud rate 4800. When I open the Holux GPS Viewer program, and click scan, it finds the gps on COM4 so I hightlighted it and clicked ok, taking me back to the main gps viewer sreen. I then click on Open GPS and I get a popup that says, "can not open comport." Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong? I would appreciate and help
