I am in same boat (and in south) and trying for the third time to find the right GPS for my wife.
Software tried so far:
Pocket Streets and Trip 2006: PPC software is map only, no routing that I can find.
iGuidance 2.1.3: Good for long distance, I do not like the street lookup. Has fun map views, tend to leave in 2D view though. A little sluggish, by 3-4 seconds over Mapolpolis, to aquire a new route if you miss a turn. Do not like the "boing" when you get to a turn (Turn Right 1000ft, Turn Right 200ft, "boing"). Voice is clear. Interface is based on bigger buttons, large enough you can use your fingers, not the stylist.
Mapopolis: Great for local, I do like street lookup. Multi-map opens are a pain when you live on a county/state edge like here is Memphis. Like being able to change timing on when to annouce a turn (currently set to 10 sec apart, 60 seconds before turn). Voice can be muddled, turn down sound from AXIM and then get a extranal boast to hear more clearly from distance. Great that you can load the program (free) and a demo map (full GPS) for 10 day try. Unable to plan multiple stops, No favorites, just last 8 dest in drop list. Uses WM5 interface, so some buttons are harder to press when mounted on base station in vehical. Wife likes best because for timing of the voice prompt also that it says "Right" not "boing". Plus it has a second habit of "br-r-ring" when you complete a turn correctly and "br-r-rong" when it is recalculating if you missed a turn.
NOTE: both software I got them confessed trying to get to my house. At the last corner I turned left and right, so both tried remapped by having me go around the block, I then U-turned and software wanted you to U-turn again to go around back around the block, instead of direct to location. Just laughed. But I do like that fact the they work out that going around the block is better when you miss a turn, then "turn around dummy!"
GPS units:
Pharos iGPS-360: Hardwired, got originally as USB with Streets and Trips, got Serial cable for AXIM. Works great, but wires are everywhere, needs to be always plugged in. Wife is currently using this one, but the WIRES!!
SEIDIO G4850: GPS is built into this base, the AXIM plugs in a gets power and GPS info, GREAT DOCKING station, good sound amp, clean look. Wife dislikes, but I am keeping because I am going to perminatily mount in suburan for long trips. Maybe pictures later. The plus is this is clean, holds AXIM great. Down side is GPS/Map software only works WHILE docked. If you want to change or look at map while holding in your hands, software whines ;-). It is great for long distances, not so good for short hops where you are changing the next stop all the time.
What I am looking for:
A bluetooth GPS, that can remain mounted in the car and turn on and off with the car. NEVER touched again by human hands! This is for my wife's car, where the clean looing SEIDIO was to go (Again not good for multiple stops).
Currently looking at:
Rakiline GPS-6033
Haicom HI-303III with bluetooth slipper
Pharos Bluetooth Dock for GPS-360 (slipper)
Rakiline looks to be correct one, but different chipset and some reported issues.
Haicom looks good, there is no on/off switch, so wiring into the car electial should work. What is good is that the Haicom can also plug into the AXIM CF slot, if needed, or if it does not work in the car.
Pharos slipper works with GPS, I have.
Anyone else got ideas
