Question GPS / Canyoning / BIG cities

Could someone (as many people as possible) answer me this contrived question.

I always hear that GPS has poor performance in 'canyon'/big city environments - where the visible sky is particularly limited. This problem is compounded by reflection/absorbtion of signal among buildings modifying the time it takes for a signal to reach ones self.

I am aware that many GPS devices also now have hardware to compensate for such drift and interfearence.

Can some people give their experience on gps performanece accuracy in a big city...

Can you get an accurate fix when cold starting on Lexington St?

While I do live in a capital city and have a GPS. Melbourne Australia simply does not compare to Hong Kong/Chicago/New York/London.

Thankyou in advance :approve:

It is not so much a question of accuracy as it is receiver sensativity. If you receive enough satalites in the right geometry, it will be accurate to 10 M 95% of the time. I have an older SiRF II and not one of the new SiRF IIIs. I live in Kansas City, Mo. Not a huge city, but the buildings do occationally shadow the signal. I also have occational problems when hiking. That can always be cleared up by finding an opening in the trees. The new SiRF IIIs are much more sensative, so they rarely have these issues.
