You can read what I wrote about my GR-271 above. I have not seen noticeable improvement with this patch. I have to believe it is the software that is buggy as ONC5 does not perform as well as Pocket Streets 2006, Street Atlas HH2006 and GPSview in finding this GPS.

Now, that being said, I do like this GPS. It works *beautifully* with all the other packages. SAHH2006 has a quirk too but the work-around finds this GPS every time.

With my old laptop and a CF adapter card I already had, it works perfectly as well.

Its performance is not the question.

frad: Technically it should work with OCN5 if that is the software you are trying to us. For iGuidance users, this patch is not needed because iGuidance has worked around the WM5 with CF issue since their released on version 2.1.3 (if I remember correctly).

gillyg, did you say you have TomTom Navigator 5 installed? If yes, please try to un-install TomTom GPS program, leaving the voice and Navigator program intact. I suspect the TomTom GPS program is overwriting the funtionality of this patch.

ronbo: Unfortunately, I cannot re-produce your issue with our Axim x51v rom a06 with the patch and OCN5 interim patch. Everything seems to work fine with HI-303III / 305III.

Thank you for your replies Jokee and ronbo... it was very helpful....and leads me to my next question.

I think I will take the chance and go with the Holux 271 since, from its specifications, price, and reviews I have read, it seems like a superior product (though please feel free to recommend and other CF GPS that might be better).

I know this is a bit off topic, but now that the hardware is settled, you guys seem like the best to ask what software I should purchase. I know absolutely nothing about what navigation software and given my chosen hardware configuration (an Axim x51v and the Holux GR-271) what would be the best software for me.

Things I am looking for are: VGA resolution support, some form of voice command ability, for it to be able to "speak" directions aloud to me. And in general a smooth polished interface. You mention ONC5... What are some others? I see ads on TV for the TomTom and its interface is very much like what I am looking for, but I read earlier that it does not work well with the x51v. Is that still the case?

Thanks again for your input. (oh also... FYI... I don't necessarily plan on buying the GPS software from buyGPSnow.com as well... so please give me as many options as possible. Anyone with first hand experience of a product and recommendations please feel free to post)

I have done more tests and here are the conclusion on testing the patch with a NMEA Compatible CF GPS on Axim x51v:

- [Does not work] TomTom Navigator 5.2x

- [Works] Destinator PN,
- [Works] iGuidance version 2.1.3 or 3
- [Works] OnCourse Navigator 5

- [Not tested yet] CoPilot Live 6, Route 66 Navigate 7 for PPC.

scottdw: Mapopolis Navigator ver. 4 + Axim X51v + any NMEA compatible CF GPS = works

I have all the softwares listed at the title line above, and the holux gr271.

i have the signal that the gps is working on com4.

when i open tomtom or ps2006 its says that no signal of gps.

what can i do to solve the problem

Now that a12 is out for the x51v can anyone tell if they have fixed the CF issue? This ROM seems to have addressed many of the problems plaguing the x51v... perhaps the CF IO issues have been resolved as well.

Anyone running a12 and have a CF GPS card that was not working properly before the update? Any improvements?

I would like to know this also. Whether the a12 rom works with the patch or whether it is needed at all? Anyone have any experiences with this?

hi guys,
i am running the x51v on a12. my haicom CF 305-III works perfectly with my programs:
navigon 5.2
vito smartmap
vito navigator2

i havent tryed to use the GPS receiver before i updated to a12

BUT i cannot access the SD card slot in my GPS receiver. my axim just doesnt recognize it although i just updated the driver.
thats drivin' me nuts!
any ideas.
