Should we Boycott Navteq GPS?
:realmad: Dell banded together with Navteq GPS software. Recently I lost the # 1 CD for the Navteq GPS software and called Dell after failing to get a link to download the software. Dell referred me to Navteq. But when I called Navteq they asked for $99 dollar for an update. Then I asked them for the older version. But to my utter surprise they denied any link to download even the older version.
It's really a shame for both Dell and Navteq. I've never seen such a poor service from a software company before.
I think people should keep themselves away from Dell GPS hardware and Nevteq GPS software.

That is ridiculous. You bought the GPS, you should be able to use it. Try calling them again.

If you loose your car key's do you think your dealer will get you a FREE new set of keys ?
get real we are in a capitalist world unless they will get some $ there's no reason for them to watse their time with you !
specially that you don't want to buy the upgrade therefore you will not be a futur customer.
P.S. if you are a legit. owner of the sofware you can download a copy (kaaza, emule ...)

What's ridiculous is being careless enough to lose the CD for a $100 product and expecting the company to make up for your carelessness.

Boycott? No.
Bad service on the part of the vendor? Yes.
Lose the CD, careless? Maybe.
I not into the GPS stuff, but...
Many companies allow for free downloading of software to support their hardware. I see this as falling into that category.
What they are selling is hardware! The software is a necessary component.
I say try calling the vendor again, someone else may have a better attitude, especially if you are nice to them to start. If not, escalate to a supervisor. If not then, escalate to a manager. Keep explaining that what you are requesting is not unreasonable. Maybe offer to pay for shipping and the reasonable cost of the CD, since it was your fault for misplacing the CD.
It is usually the sqeaky wheel that gets the oil.
Good Luck.

Having managed a customer support office for several years, my opinion is that the companies are only hurting themselves. The cost to supply you a replacement is minimal (especially if you can download it). I have found that a little positive customer service pays off large down the road. That whole capitalist attitude only works if 1) you have a monopoly or 2) you are in for the quick buck and don't care about long term. That is why so many companies in the US are gonig belly-up.

Part of our guiltless society. I lost the CD, but it is the other guy's fault because they would not give me another or let me download it. It would have been good customer service to give it to him, but I believe the product will work with any GPS unit.
I am a Network Engineer where I work and we handle Remote Access. I just love the calls on Friday afternoon, saying I am going out-of-town for a week or two and need to check my email. I have no idea where my authentication device is. The last time I had it was when I went on vacation last year. I have a new laptop and need the software installed on it. I need for you to show me how to use it again also. Oh and my plane leaves in 2 or 3 hours. If we do not get it done, we catch hell. No big deal that a router or switch is having a problem and we need to work on that also.

You expect a company to send you an older version of the CD? Most companies do not keep old software around in case you lose your CD. And they will certainly not give you a free upgrade copy. As for downloading the CD, I'm guessing they don't make that available since it's too easy for it to be pirated/distributed.
Next time, make backups of your software. And, nah, I won't be boycotting Navteq since I like their software. As for poor customer support - that's not poor customer support...just normal customer support for the industry.
