Destinator & VGA mode?

Hi,

I purchased and installed Destinator 6 last week and its display seems to be in 'QVGA' mode, ie. the text and streets drawn are blocky, well, particularly when compared to iGuidance, which looks ultra-sharp in comparison. Does anyone know if Destinator actually supports VGA resolution?

I hope to give a bit of a review of the product this weekend if I get time, comparing it with iGuidance 2.1.2 Europe.

QVGA and VGA

I fully agree with you.

I have Iguidance NA for my North-America destinations. It is quite nice (for the price) and quite flexible (Laptop and PDA version for the same price) and no bloody registration things for maps.

I now installed Destinator PN (version 5.1.172) for my upcoming trip to France. I was looking at IGuidance Europe but it is discontinued so my next best (cheap) option was Destinator PN.

I must say the GUI screen is a notch below IGuidance, especially in screen font and resolution. Of course, there is few things I prefer in IGuidance and few things I might like in Destinator. My 2 weeks trip will tell. For now I have to enter my potential Chateau destination in my favorite, if they are not in the POI database, which i have to check.

The install was with not trouble once I knew NOT to use the supplied CD for the PDA software installation but rather use the patch which is not only a patch but contains the Destinator PN software. Why do they call this the patch if it has all the required software to run under WM5 beats me.

I then installed the Console using the CD#1 and pick my map (France) which is on CD #2. Everything went fine.

I then installed, in addition to the English US (from the patch), the French intertace and Virginie voice (French voice files). I then installed the text to speach application using the console to add voice to street names. Will see how that works. That a plus (I think) over the IGuidance approach.

Favorites, addresses and finding my way using the new interface (I am used to IGuidance) will take some practice but it is not too bad. I do not have the Canadian map for Destinator so I cannot try it before my trip. Too bad.

I then added the Spain and Portugal map (Iberia). The good thing is that Destinator allows you to have different maps and switch on the spot which IGuidance does not allow.

Also, Destinator comes (patch) will only Com 1,3,5,8 for GPS port. I had my IBlue on Com 7 so I had to change the partnership to Com 8. My GPS view program (comes with IBlue GPS unit) picked it up. I changed my IGuidance to now pick on Com 8 which was no problem and finally my Destinator picked-up the GPs signal on Com 8. So all works fine.

But yes the Destinator screen sucks especially when you are use to VGA.

Well, it seems I found my answer

From Destinator Support today:

Quote:
Thank you for your mail and your interest for our products

The device which you are using doesn´t appear on the compatibility list for Destinator 6.That is maybe the reason of the failure
Please consult the compatibility list on the internet link :

http://www.destinatortechnologies.ne...atibility.html
That list expands out to:
Axim X30, Axim X3, Axim X3i, Axim X5, Axim X50, Axim X51, Axim X51v

Is the Dell X50v that unpopular that Destinator won't support VGA on it (resolution's in QVGA)?!

Oh!

I did not realize you had the X50v and Destinator 6.

See, I can't seem to find Destinator 6 on this side of the pond! All they seem to have is Destinator PN.

Is Destinator 6 only available in Europe?

I am getting really pissed with my purchase now.

First, I wanted IGuidance Europe for the price I was accepting to pay. I Was told it is discontinued. Althoug I still can see it on the INav website

And then Destinatortechnologies.com says nothing about Destinator 6. All the site talks about is Destinator PN.

After an hour I am trying to "plan" a simple route from Toulouse, France to Bordeaux, France and it is not obvious. I feel I will have to read the manual.:realmad:

Arhgggg!

Sorry, I'm venting now.

I can understand... I was very unhappy when I saw the difference between iGuidance and Destinator! Destinator 6 is presently only available in Europe (it's the next version after PN), from what I was told by buygpsnow.com. I don't know if any of the UK sellers listed will sell to where you're living but I'd guess the shipping wouldn't be fun.

I decided last night to try the 'Force VGA Hack' (that comes with Tweaks2k2) on Destinator to see if I could solve my VGA problems that way - well, yes and no. The program (before-hack) is definitely displaying in QVGA mode. With the hack, the program looks a LOT more sharp! However, there is a (major) catch. The bottom bar, which shows your speed, distance to go, etc, ends up being in the left middle of the VGA screen. Seems they hardcoded where the display bar should be - in the other screens (eg setup, etc), it appears in the correct position. So it's nearly VGA compatible. Come on, Destinator! It looks quite good in VGA mode apart from that problem...

Anyone know a way around what I'm seeing with the bar - or is the program simply not VGA compatible? I used the hack on the Destinator.exe.

Is there a way to change its colors or to use 'daytime mode'? (I notice Destinator has day and night mode). Hmm, otherwise I was going to consider getting the next version of Navigon, once they have the Q1/2006 maps.

If everyone who's using Destinator were to email them asking for VGA support, then maybe... (I have so far!)

you can download verious diferent colours sceems from the navigon website but none of them worked on my pda. PDA just froze when i tried to put it on. i was never a fan of tomtom because of there hold on the market but at the moment it is one of the best all round products. I have tried I-GO which looks great but no 7 didgt post code search only 5. The voice cant do miles only Kmtrs. But the graphics WOW. Why not down load all the software from GSM Forum (Downloading software is illegal children). try them all out then pay for the one you want. thats what i did. that is why i have tried them all.

Hi Androabo,

wow, how did you do that? Which PDA are you using? Destinator 6 seems to take up so much memory on my Axim X50v that it crashes bluetooth every so often, requiring a soft-reset. The Axim seems to take forever to reset if bluetooth had crashed...

I like its navigation but due to the low-resolution (though PN with the VGA patch helped) and the regular bluetooth crashing (with *no* other apps running), I'm selling mine now on eBay... To Destinator's credit, though, their support email is very helpful and get back to you quickly.

@ Androabo

Those screen captures look fantastic. I'm a dissappointed with the QVGA of Destinator 6 compared to TomTom's VGA screen.

http://rapidshare.de/files/31125187/...r_VGA.zip.html

Copy the file "Destinator.exe.0409" (if you owner of english version) for Destinator paste, and the paste "Otimizado" to ...\Destinator\Skin

There are 3 limitations:
The pop-up window is very small.
The window of sattelites configurations don't show accordingly.
The streets names is very small.

I waiting for help and improvements.

Axim X5 & Destinator 6 Europe

Hi,

I have just got Destinator 6 and it will not communicate with my Axim X5. I get an error message "Cannot get data from Mobile Device. Please try again!"

Yet Destinator site says that the software is compatible with X5. I have soft booted and hard booted the X5 and still get the same message.

Any ideas on what is wrong??????

Thanks,

Anthony,

I too installed Destinator 5 on my X50v WM2003SE yesterday. Tech support told me to use the Tweaks2K2 Lite (free) utility and place the X50v into 'VGA' mode. They said the maps would be OK but that the icons would be bunched up in the upper left corner as they are set up only for QVGA. This is what I see now. This works in portrait or landscape mode when the display is in VGA mode. When the display is in QVGA mode, I cannot use landscape as the display gets corrupted.

So unless someone comes out with a hack for the icons, are we stuck with using it in QVGA portrait mode (for version 5)

Now, tech support DID say that WM5 supports VGA mode on the X50v. Too bad Dell never fixed WM5 issues on the X50v.

AXIM 30i High with Destinator 6 ??

I am thinking of upgrading from Destinator 3 to Destinator 6.

Although has anyone run Destinator 6 on a AXIM 30 i yet ?

Does it work ?

Ok it will not be in VGA mode but anyway it is the functionality that you want.

Regards,
Lennart
