Latest 2008 NT Garmin maps are FREE if you purhased after May 1, 2007
Garmin is finally shipping the City Navigator North America NT 2008 Deluxe Unlock DVD for the Mobile XT!!!
Apparently, it had been available for the Nuvis but not for the GMXTs due to installation-related technical shortfalls.
To my pleasant surprise, the latest 2008 DVD is free if you purchased your GMXT after May 1, 2007. I think Garmin was smart to reverse their "No Free Map Updates" policy, as it surely would have ticked off most new Garmin buyers, like myself.
All you need to do is register your unit at my.gamin.com and under "my Registered Products," click "Map updates" and it will then take you through the free update process - and as a confirmation you'll receive the following confirmation e-mail:
Thank you ... for completing GARMIN's MapSource update Disk
order process!
Your order ID is: xxxxxxxx
Your Disk should arrive within 7 - 10 business days via First Class Mail as soon
as it is available and ships.
Information about the Disk you ordered:
MapSource Product: City Navigator North America NT 2008 Deluxe Unlock
Version #: 2008
Release Date: May 1, 2007
After your Disk arrives, come back to Garmin: MapSource Unlock to get an
unlock code for the updated data.
Can't wait to get the latest maps. cheers.

Pros:
- Automated Bluetooth Connection
- Good Navteq maps
- Decent GUI
- Not bad features list
- Not bad POI list
- In my area, maps VERY accurate.
Cons:
- Expensive map upgrades
- Automated Bluetooth Connection, with no COM port selection, making it useless with the Widcomm stack
- Map panning very slow
- Zooming very slow
- Sometimes, if the compation thread (x50 upgraded) is running, the voice becomes VERY UNBELIVEABLY slow.
- Cannot add POI
- Calculating route sometimes slow

CON:
You just cannot add a map of a new state without deleting the previous maps. You have to reload all of the previous state plus load the new one.

I have an Axim X50 running CE2003. Does anyone know if the Garmin Mobile 10 is compatible with it? Thanks

I have been using Odyssey Mobile 4.0 on my Axim x51v with the Visiontac VGPS-700 for about a month.
I agree with much of what Jake had to say in his review and in his pros and cons.
PROS: - VERY easy to enter destination
- Directions are accurate and voice commands timed well
- Extremely quick to reroute you when you miss a turn
- Good POIs -- easy to bring them up and route to them.
- Can manually set a point of origin to plot out mileage from waypoints. This is really handy for programming in tomorrow's trip, and getting a sense of how long it will take you from work to get the destination.
CONs - Voice doesn't call out street names (they say it is coming in version 5)
- Odyssey software screws up how fonts display when you later try to surf the net using PIE. (requires soft reset) - UPDATE: This is not a problem with WM 6.1
- Odyssey software often recalculates when you are on a highway exit ramp - once off the ramp, it recalculates to the previous route.
- Practically non-existent customer service.
I have heard about some display problems with VGA devices, but have had none while the program itself is running. I am very happy with the way that this program works. The only other complaint I have so far is that it would be nice to get a map update -- but it seems to be only about three years off.

I’ve narrowed down my GPS software selection to Garmin M10, OCN6, IG4 & TT6 to use with my Axim X51V A12 for North America.
Below, are my preliminary research findings / impressions from reading various forums, reviews and latest GPS sources. I’ll update this as I continue my research. The ranking is in the order of what I’d likely be purchasing:
#1) Garmin Mobile 10 - seems to be the overall most robust solution
PROS: highly accurate routing, includes both laptop & PDA s/w which allows route and/or waypoint transfers from the desktop to PDA (at least on the Axim x51v),
NavTeq ver 8 map (ver 9 to be released in August), free traffic/ weather/ fuel/ hotel data & other wireless svcs via GPRS/EDGE Bluetooth connection, 3D map view, route to contacts
CONS: 6 million POIs (proprietary?), no TTS (text to speech), no FM receiver for FM/XM/TMC traffic feeds via included Garmin GPS 10X Sirf III-based receiver, no longer free map upgrades even if you purchased a day before new version is released, you’ll still have to pay the $75 map upgrade fee, not as easy to install
#2) OnCourseNavigator 6 – Jake Rich’s review initially made this my top choice
PROS: best 3D graphics, reliable routing, 12.5 million POIs (customizable DB), easy idiot-proof self-install, smooth 3D map view, easy searching of POIs, 30-day money back guarantee, ETA relatively accurate
CONS: TeleAtlas 3Q2006 maps, no TTS, can only be run from SD card, no route to contacts
#3) Iguidance 4 – seems to be most reliable down to which side of street
PROS: reliable routing, NAvTeq 1Q2007 maps, has TTS, tells you which side of the street, best ETA calculations, 6 million POIs
CONS: apparent direct routing glitches mentioned on gpspassion, global search feature not user-friendly, std & TTS voice prompts differ in volume/quality, new version difficult to install, graphics could be improved
#4) TomTom 6 – seems to be easiest to use and most customizable
PROS: fast routing, very nice graphics, most user friendly GUI, TomTom Plus Services, ability to easily import/export POIs, easy to setup and install, stable and robust, route to contacts, highly customizable, up to date maps
CONS: no North Up mode, map errors and routing efficiency?
Pease feel free to update and/or CORRECT any inaccuracies or outdated data I may have missed or misinterpreted.
|
Can the gurus in this forum enlighten me if any of the above would allow me to use, additionally, a umpc (like 9"Asus eee, Acer Aspire or MSI 9") I have Iguidance 3 and Iguidance Europe 2 ( on my Asus Mypal 616) and about to update .
Daniel
