gps and car stereo
is there any type of device or even a car head unit that will allow the pda to use the speakers in the car, but it would have to be able to play over top of the radio? I would like it to be able to turn down the radio and play the directions, then turn the radio back up again. I havent seen anything like this, does it exist?

I recently bought a Coby 7" portable DVD player tablet style from Amazon.com for $99 that should be arriving tomorrow. In the package, they include a line that will connect the output to the cassette deck so that the sound of the DVD player can come through the car speakers.

I am going to see if I can use that to connect my Axim output to the car speakers -- it should work.

And if Coby is including it in their system, it should be available for sale alone.

Hmm. Rereading your post again, I see that we are talking about different things. What you want I think would require another set of speakers mounted in the car that is not connected to the radio -- that can be performed by the radio guys in the shop, I am sure.

hrm, what about these hands free car cell phone kits? seems they may do waht I am wanting. Is it possible to have a bluetooth connection to the gps receiver and a connection to another device at the same time? The other connection could be to a device such as this:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-fU9awNO...free+ca r+kit

I would just have to make sure that it would work when the pda is putting out a sound signal.

I have sometimes used an FM transmitter, the type that goes into the lighter power jack, with the mini-jack plugged into the audio out of the PDA. Usually though, I don't like having my CD interrupted by that nice lady telling me to turn left at the next corner.

I've looked high and low for something that would do this and haven't found anything. If you find something please post back.

Most of car stero have a CD charger input with analog right+left audio input.
The problem is most car stereo reject that input if not detecting some sort of binary signal at digital input.
If that is your case you still have a couple of solutions:
First, there are in the market some devices from $40 to $70 that emulates CD charger. It converts CD charger input as a standard audio aux input. Make some searchs at Ebay.
Second, if you do not want to spend money you can open your car stereo, you will see a bus like wire going from CD unit to motherboard. You will need to identify witch ones are left&right audio signals. Follow the lines as they ingress at motherboard, you must see a couple of them taking same path to somewhere. Probably they will jump across resistors and capacitors, but remember you must have a couple of twin paths. Those paths finally must reach some sort of audio circuitry, tipically an audio preamplifier chip. You can identify chip features at the web. Once you catch audio lines just cut them at the wire fron CD unit to motherboard and solder wiring for your external input. Remaks:

For this to work you will allways need to leave a "dump" CD loaded.
Of course it has some impedance misadaptation but it works. Just play the volume a little bit higher.

I have it working in my Symphony car stero that cames with Skoda Superb model. I had to use pins 1(audio, 2(ground) and 3(audio).

Also remember that none of both solutions will work when listening radio. If you want PDA sound over the radio you could feed PDA sound using handsfree mono signal input witch is also an standard input for most current car stereo. I have not tried it, sorry.

I'm looking for something like this too. Although, I would prefer to not rip my car apart. I have a 2003 Chevy Impala and I dont have the time to even figure out how to get the radio out, let along tweak it.

A better solution (in my opinion) than ripping my car apart would be something contained in the PDA. I.E. a program that plays music (any MP3's that I have on my ax) but turns off the music when the GPS lady starts talking, then back on when she's done. I dont use my GPS for EVERY trip, so the trips that I AM using the GPS, I would settle for not listening to the radio or cd player and just listen to the MP3's on my ax and use an FM transmitter to play everything through the car speakers.

If anyone knows of such a program, please let me know.

I already have an FM transmitter for my car...so I would prefer to do this with some type of program within the Ax. And, free would be best (of course).

BTW, welcome to the site. Thanks for your suggestion.

Car stereo devices must meet some standard to be able to work together with standard external devices like power amplifiers, handsfree devices or CD changers.
ISO standard is the most commun. At this link you have ISO pinout:
http://www.fabia-vrs.com/carkit.htm
Top connector is made up of 3 sections: Yellow (audio out), Green (hansfree) and Blue (CD changer).
Besides that you can see bottom connector has a pin named "Telephone Mute", this pin is used by handsfree devices to mute radio/CD while a telephone call. I cannot say but I suppose it must be grounded.

What you need is a circuit to detect threshold noise at PDA audio out so that it can ground "Telephone Mute" line. Circuit should add an adjustable delay for better behavior on voice commands. Seach the web it is posible to find an alredy made box such that. It is also very easy to buid, the electronic term of that circuit is "Trigger Schmitt" Example:
http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu...c/schmitt.html

See also my post about how to get an aux audio input from ISO connector:

Mistake!!
"Telephone Mute" will mute everything but handsfree audio input.
It means my proposed method only works if you connect PDA audio to handsfree audio input ( it is a mono input).

There are Bluetooth enabled car stereo head units that will probably do what you are looking for... here are links to a couple of them:

There are more out there...

This one comes out this month, and it sounds cool, It's the first to actually connect to more than just a phone, you can theoretically (the article only mentions the sony ericson phone) use your Axim to stream the music...and it'll sound much better than an FM transmitter.
