New to GPS/TomTom and I have questions

I am new to GPS and I have couple questions.

I am waiting for my BT Holux 236 receiver to arrive(hopefully by thurs), in the mean time, I am playing with TomTom 5 on my x51v. I loaded Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, TN maps to the SD. Since I live in IL, I selected IL as my map. I have a trip going from IL to TN. If I tried to do Advanced Planning, I selected my home address as depart from, but when I tried to select my destination, it is not on the list since it is in TN and I can only have 1 map selected at a time. How do I do advanced planning then.

Now, if I do "Navigate To...", do I select TN as the Map and then type in the destination address in TN. Then, TomTom will tell me how to get there, even displaying all the roads in IL, Indiana, Kentucky and all the way to TN? I am confused...I must be missing something here.

Thanks

You need the Major Roads map for TomTom in order to travel from one zone to another. Or if you have the entire US as one seamless map, you can navigate from state to state. TomTom also splits the US into zones - each zone encompasses several states. So if you load up the zone that includes IL and TN, you should be able to travel from one state to the other (Midwest region).

If you only have separate states, you will have to navigate from your Home to the state border. Once you cross into the other state, you'll have to load up the map for that state, then navigate to your final Destination. That's why I like iGuidance - you can create maps the way you want - single states, several states, single cities with definable surrounding area by radius.

The GUI for TomTom is nicer, but the maps and voice guidance and map creation for iGuidance are superior.

Thanks Solara. I have Major Roads Map. Do you think I should be able to use that to navigate close to where I want to go in TN and then switch over to TN map once I am inside TN?

Yeah, use Major Roads to go from IL to TN, and switch to the TN maps anytime once you're in TN.
