Frenchy, I did the same thing. Of course, I put it in a padded bag and pretended to use it as a pillow, against the open window :)
bigdave, wat kind of radar detector is that?!?! I don't see any satelite networks going off here.......... uh oh, there goes my TV
(just kidding)
just a regular old radar detector in the car. they radiate acrost the whole Ku satellite band. Park near your local cable company where they receive from the satellite on Ku band and see what happens. More business for me!
Being the boring voice and sense and reason, I should probably point out that not only is this good old fashioned illegal in at least the US (no devices capable of wireless data/signal transmission can be used during flight) but that given the current state of terrorism paranoia, using something capable of determining location (eg. could be construed as being able to be used to direct a missle, or set off an explosion once a certain altitude/distance is reached) is just asking to be reamed by every bureau who goes by an acronym of some sort.
I mean, why would you take that sort of risk given the current air travel climate?
I wouldn't call you boring, sensible, or reasonable...just misinformed. It is not illegal to use a GPS on a commercial airliner in the US according to the FAA. This is the Jet Blue site's approved devices list but it *must* be FAA compliant.
If fact, the last time I flew Jet Blue between Providence RI and Tampa FL, Jet Blue's magazine stated that GPS units *could* be used on board the aircraft once the traditional electronics device block out period (below 10k ft) has expired. In fact, I did use my GPS on this flight and I did not hide it...it was in plain view. Now with the current environment, it probably isn't a great idea but I have not heard a proabition was imposed again.

Right you are. It seems that some airlines ban their use, while others allow it, although this remains at the pilot's discretion. I wasn't aware of this.
I wonder how they'd feel about BT GPS units, since I'm assuming that's what most Axim owners would be using?

Bluetooth devices fall under the prohibited devices category along with cell phones, cb radios, AM/FM radios, and the like.
In your original post, you mentioned "no devices capable of wireless data/signal transmission can be used during flight". GPS devices are not transmitters but recievers.
Cellphones are a different matter. Not only are they illegal to use in an aircraft, but they are also not allowed when flying in a balloon. I went to Ballonfest in Albuquerque, NM last year. My brother-in-law lives there and crews for his neighbor. It was mentioned in the pilot briefing several times that you were not allowed to use the cellphone when aloft or even have them turned on. As mentioned in a previous post, it communicates with to many cellsites and can cause the cellphone companies problems. I think this is one of those FAA/FCC working together things to stop issues.

Is it paranoia if people actually are trying to blow up planes?
I am a very frequent flyer and have used GPS off and on over the years. Basically, look in the back of the airline's magazine and it will typically explicitly forbid or permit GPS usage. This is always subject to being over-ridden by any flight attendant. Typically, they don't care.
GPS works in an airplane, but don't get caught. I had to put my GPS device close to the window in order to pick up signals. A hostess walked by and asked if it was a GPS device and then freaked out. I got a stern warning and had to shut it down. If you get caught using GPS on a plane, prepare to be treated like a potential terrorist.
Terrorism fear-mongering is really starting to screw up our country (Edit: the USA I mean)...
I've used both a garmin emap and my belkin bluetooth GPS on planes. It usually takes 10+ minutes to aquire and often loses signal. By the way, the southwest airlines approved electronics device list includes GPS recievers as one of the approved devices. American airlines does not.
Oh, and you didn't hear it from me, but what you could do, on a longer flight, is put the reciever in a bag thing, and put it in your pillow, and put the pillow against the window as if you were resting. Then, casually use your Axim :) But if its wired, don't let them see the wires coming from the pillow, that wouldn't be good.

I used my Dell Axim bluetooth using GPS Tuner and Google Earth map overlays on a flight from Chicago to Honululu. Worked just fine usually had at least 6 sats with the gps sitting on the the armrest next to the window on a 777. People around were actually asking me to see the Axim. We reached 612mph on final desent!

What software do you use to view google earth overlays?
