Here what a plug-in is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plugin
|
Quote:
|
A plugin (or plug-in) is a computer program that interacts with a main application (a web browser or an email program, for example) to provide a certain, usually very specific, function.
Typical examples are plugins that
read or edit specific types of files (for instance, multimedia files)
encrypt or decrypt email (for instance, PGP)
filter images in graphic programs
The main application provides services which the plugins can use, including a way for plugins to register themselves with the main application and a protocol by which data is exchanged with plugins.
Plugins are dependent on these services provided by the main application and do not usually work by themselves. Conversely, the main application is independent of the plugins, making it possible for plugins to be added and updated dynamically without changes to the main application.
Plugins are slightly different from extensions, which modify or add to existing functionality.
The main difference is that plugins generally rely on the main application's user interface and have a well-defined boundary to their possible set of actions. Extensions generally have fewer restrictions on their actions, and may provide their own user interfaces. They sometimes are used to decrease the size of the main application and offer optional functions

Mapopolis. Like FallN, I see the "unknown street" which is for things like the 15 feet between twin two-lane highways, etc. That's just how it interprets these roads.

displaying POI on map

The thing I most dislike about IG3 is that you can't display a certain category (e.g. gas stations) on the map at one time; or at least I haven't been able to figure out how to do it. If anyone knows how, please let me know.

Actually, there is a feature in iGuidance which allow you to display any one or more categories of POI on your map. Click on tools (or Menu) > display options > under POI colum, click on "custom", and select whichever categories you want to have displayed on your map.

1)find within 25miles and then have to look through all of the results according to distance. (i would like to be able to search within 25 miles by name)
there may be a solution that i dont know of yet when searching for closest POI. if so please enlighten me as it would be very helpful.

There are 4 lookup options for POI:
1. within 25 miles by name (in alphabetical order)
2. within 25 miles by distance
3. all within the state (in alphabetical order)
4. all within a city (in alphabetical order)
To look up by name within 25 miles, you may click on "Alphabetical" under "within 25 miles" section, and it will list everything within 25 miles by name.

Sorry but I still dont get it. Say for instance I want to search all the Mcdonald's within 40 kms (or 25 miles) distance from my location. I go to POI, select restaurant-Fast food. Now I can either select Alphabetical or by distance , but not alphabetical and by distance. If there is a way out, please let us know. Thanks.

I use IG3, and while not the greatest, it does everything I need it to do. Every so often it throws me a curve, but it does it's job about 98% of the time. I feel that it's real shortcoming is in it's routing. If you compare the route it creates to say MS S&T route, you will usually find the S&T route to be shorter and more preferable.
FWIW, I tested two other programs and IG3 was way better than either of them.
Regards,
Pat

I used Mapopolis for a few years. It's a good, plain-vanilla GPS program, but it does have a couple quirks. For one, the map data itself is stored county-by-county. This is good if you're making a very short trip, because it limits the amount of map data in memory at once. For long trips, however, it quickly becomes a nightmare, trying to figure out which counties to load to get a proper route. Sure, they provide Major Road maps for each state, too, but that doesn't preclude the neccessity of loading county maps if you want to use Points of Interest. And how often do you need to use a GPS if you're just going down the street?
Number 2, bodies of water are all effed up. Often the water in a single map will show up as land. Remember when I said the data are stored county by county? This causes some very Picasso-like maps when travelling close to the oceans, or around the Great Lakes. If you're in Nebraska, this probably wouldn't be a problem, but I'm in Michigan, so it quickly became unacceptable. I made the mistake of testing it out using a demo map of my landlocked county. After I bought and downloaded the maps, I made a cross-state trip and realized my mistake.
Mapopolis: It sucks.
I just switched to iGuidance 3 a couple months ago. It's like stepping 10 years forward in technology. It does seem a little more difficult to use than Mapopolis, but that could be because I'm used to the Mapopolis controls. It does have a couple options for 3D views, but I'm not sure yet if I prefer that to 2D or not.
I haven't been using iG3 long enough to badmouth it like I did Mapopolis, but given enough time I'm sure I can come up with something.
Oh, I forgot to mention. Mapopolis seems to purposely make the button controls exceptionally small, to prevent people from using them while driving, I think. As far as I'm concerned, people are going to do what they want to do, and making the buttons small just makes it more likely that someone using them while driving is going to get in an accident. On the other hand, iG3 has large on-screen buttons and a complete menu system suitable for using your finger. Very handy when I'm stopped at a light. I can make some adjustments without fumbling for the stylus.
