If you don't know where you are, X marks the spot. Set that GPS location as your home, and if you get lost in a city, just route to Home!

I have a handheld unit that I take on the boat when I scuba dive to mark the dive locations.

Don't know when I'll ever use the info, but It's kinda kewl to see the locations mapped around an island.

In the UK (and probaly other countries), one can use a program called Memory Map which includes detailed Ordnance Survey maps of just about every area of the country in high detail, coupled with aerial maps too. It's good for hiking/camping/rambling/ambling/climbing/boating/cycling/off roading etc.

'Draw' a route on the map on your PC, fly through it in 3D to check it out, transfer it to your PDA, take it with you, use it, edit it to account for reality etc. Find out more here: http://www.memory-map.co.uk/pda_mobile.htm. I have no commercial connection with this product, just think it's good.

PS
Just seen someone else mentioned MM too. Also, I don't know if JotM is talking about MM, but MM's fly-throughs are self-contained and can be on a 3D map or a 3D rendering of aerial photos. They can also be saved to an avi file.

One can keep track of positions while hiking or trekking, convert the track file to Google Earth format, "fly the route" in GE, grab the screen while doing that and use that as footage to start the video with to show family and friends.

I use it hiking--once when the trail up a mountain was under a meter of snow, the GPS kept me on or near the trail so I could keep going instead of turning back. Also, I do most of my hiking in Japan--archeological ruins are everywhere. Now I can mark the spot and when I get back to town show the staff at the history museum or the culture department of city hall (where I work) the map and ask, was that a castle? village abandoned hundreds of years ago? temple? So far I've found two ancient kiln sites that weren't in any databases of local archeology. I also use it driving to check out interesting side roads in the mountains without taking an hour to drive up each one. Is it just an old logging road to nowhere, or does it lead to a half-forgotten mountaintop shrine or unvisited waterfall? Now I can find out right away. By the way, great free calibratable topo maps of every single inch of Japan can be found at http://watchizu.gsi.go.jp/mapsearch.html.

I used it recently while I was taking some photos of the change in environment while a new major road was being built. Very useful to be sure you're taking the photos from the same position each time.

if you are ingenious you can use your gps device to make a robotic vehicle navigate on its own ie: remote control plane with a mini-computer installed can be progammed to fly to a destination and return all on its own without any human control

I use mine with Intelligolf. It lets you map out any course by adding coords. of yardage markers, fr/mid/bk of green, hazards, etc. for each hole. You can then tell your distance from any of these landmarks from your current location. Distance is straightline distance so it helps out if someone wants to cut a corner on a dogleg for instance. It hasn't helped my game, but it's nice to know how far I am from the green from anywhere on the hole.
I've also got the coords. of several brushpiles and dropoffs marked in our local lake in Backcountry Navigator.

Sorry to leave you hanging for a reply but I've not been about for a couple of weeks.

I have a slight advantage in that I work for Cheetah and I've get to play with their new technology before any of it comes out onto the market. We've got an in-house hardware solution / platform that integrates many different detectors and jammers with our ActiveStealth speed camera software. It's pretty cool.

The software is available now for the USA and the UK but the 3-into-1 antenna / hub is not going to be about till later in the year.

I'll send a proper press release about it to the Site admin but you can get some details on ActiveStealth from the website www.speedcheetah.com or you can read the press release on this blog site www.speedcheetah.blogspot.com
