Aximsitex3icon Looking for Awsome Mapping Program

I am looking for some awsome program, I need it to do good maps but I also need a good routing program and of course GPS capable. The problem I seem to be having is that there are many programs out there but not many are AWSOME epecially for the PPC. Like Microsoft Streets and Trips, their PC version does everything I want (and then some), but from what I am hearing those feature don't migrate over to Pocket Streets. Can someone please suggest an Awsome program at can do all this? Thanks

Microsoft Streets & Trips! Good app that syncs with Autoroute and transfers POI and maps to the ppc. It is also GPS enabled.

Failing that - TomTom

Why don't you tell us what you want in this AWSOME program? Everything you mentioned is found in all of the major players (iGuidance, Tom Tom, etc.). What have you looked at and what don't you like about those programs?

I want to look at a REAL map not a colored toy of a map I want to be able to creat a route by adding either addresses or GPS cordances. I have been looking at alot just not sure what they ALL do. I really want it to work great with the PPC thanks for all the info I'm still looking.

Welcome to Aximsite!

Maps are, by definition, "colored toys" that are poor representations of the real world. Read GPS201 and look at the maps in there to see what I mean. You still haven't pinned down what you want to do with these maps. Here are a few questions:

Do you want to drive? Where? Long distance or local?
Do you want to walk? Where?
Do you want to ride a bicycle? Where?
Do you want to go off-roading? Where?
Do you want to go geocaching? Where?
Do you want to go out on a boat? Where?

If you drive, do you want it to speak to you?
If you want it to speak, is it ok just to say "left," and "right," or do you want it to read the name of the road to you?
Are points of interest of interest to you? If so, which ones?

All of those questions really do have an impact on what might be a good choice for you.

I would recommend reading GPS101, GPS201, all the reviews here at Aximsite and at least this thread. After that, we may be able to help.

Map program

Hi:

To look at "real" maps (e.g. USGS quads), you could look at ESRI's ArcPad (though I like the suggestion above of Tracky -- just never tried it). This is kind of a high end, semi-hard to learn mapping program ($500). It is, though, a truly "awesome" mapping program -- along with ArcMap, the full version desktop program. You can load any digitized (DRG) USGS map or satelite photo (DOQQ). You can kind of set up a track to follow. You draw your route in as a shape file, then keep yourself on the line with the GPS indicator, but it's not as good as any of the navigation programs out there. Nor will it talk to you to tell you when to turn etc. I've heard you can run Street Map on the latest version, but have not tried it myself.

I used ArcPad in a wilderness setting for the last 4 months on an x51 with a BT-77 GPS and an Otterbox 2600 case. It worked great.

Good luck.

George

If you want "real" satellite-image or topo maps and be able to draw out a route and have the program tell you when to make turns, check out OziExplorer. Memory Map is another great one though I'm not sure it gives voice guidance as to when to make turns. Both programs are "raster-based" programs.

Obviously, neither of these programs can re-route or create routes on-the-fly for you since they require you to draw out the route ahead of time. If you want a program to route and re-route for you, you'll have to go with the "fake" maps (vector-based) and programs like iGuidance, TomTom, iGo, Mapopolis, Navigon, etc.

Sounds like you want a program that can route/re-route and give voice-guidance AND uses satellite image maps. No such thing exists that I know of.

Well guys thanks for all the impute, to answer a few questions.
I need to drive in a few local areas but I need them to be acurate, but I don't want to be limited by that. I would like to use the same program from 4wheelin', hiking and biking. I am used to naving on Topo Maps so I have some idea of my terrein so I would like to use a topo. Sounds to me so far I will need multipule programs to do ALL I want. Thanks again for all your impute
