semi-OT: strange GPS behaviour in downtown Toronto!

I was driving around Bloor / Parliament / Church streets in Toronto tonight, with my x51v and iGuidance GPS software directing me to my in-laws' place in Scarborough.

After dropping off my friend, iGuidance started behaving erratically. At one point, it would tell me to drive 4km till I reach the Don Valley Parkway, but then after a few seconds it would tell me to turn immediately right... or left.. or .. keep driving.. When I stopped at a light, the map would be changing and putting me on a different street (or no street -- but in a building!) every second or two! It couldn't point out where I was. That was probably the reason for the erratic direction commands I was getting. *Even when I was stopped* the map kept changing. I checked the GPS satellite info, and it said I had about 8 satellites locked... so that was ok.

So for about 20 minutes I was totally lost (I am not too familiar with downtown Toronto) because I was making wrong turns that iGuidance was spitting out... when I finally got out of that area, my iGuidance was finally functioning normally.

Later tonight I recalled that this was the exact area where there have been reports of strange electromagnetic fields around the area for many years (and the usual UFO theories).

Just wanted to share the story with you guys. Kinda creepy... I don't think iGuidance is to blame for this though!!!

There was a black out in Europe today... I believe they are related!

Actually, I report a simular error on US24 on the TN/GA boarder, there are appears to be an alignment error between the two state maps, so that driving on US24 west from GA, you end up to iGuidance as on service road in TN, that parallels US24. It corrected itself a few miles up the road, when the service road got to far away from the freeway and it "snapped" back on to the freeway.

No, it's not iGuidance, it's the GPS receiver.

You should have pressed reset of X51v and start iGuidance 3 all over again. It happened to me now and then with iGuidance 2.1 with my X50v (now also dead), and the only cure was to reset. I guess the PDA had used up all its RAM as buffer and needed a reset.

I could be just signals bouncing around in the buildings. I saw a similar effect when I came off the Gardiner Expressway onto Yonge street. For several blocks the GPS wandered around sort of randomly. It settled down in about 5 blocks on Yonge. If it persists, it could also be some sort of interference from some transmitter nearby...if there is one.

It's a concrete jungle out there. You're probably not using a GPS receiver with SiRF III chipset?

My SiRF III equiped GPS rarely shows that symptom at that particular location. Further down at Yonge and Wellington with narrow streets and tall buildings, somewhat. My friend's Garmin (non SiRF III) does that more often at the same locations.
